I need something to help with insulin absorption. I'm currently taking a ton of insulin (42u Lantus, 5:1 carb/novolog ratio), and its getting expensive. Are there any supplements, anything I can do??

Well for me if I eat less carbs I need less insulin. Are you eating a lot of carbs ?

Not really. I'm just looking around at all these people who are on like 15u of lantus and a 20:1 carb ratio... will these kinds of results come with time?

Well I can't really answer that for you because you have type 1 and I am type 2. I take 75u of Lantus and using a 1:4 carb ratio so for me I am probably not going to be using less. :)

Are you injecting into the belly fat ? or some other spot ?

Using pens or regular syringes ?

The depth of the injection could affect the absorption some but I wouldn't think a huge amount.

Usually in the stomach, but it's starting to hurt to do it there. the reason I do is because I use a pen, and its hard to inject other sites.

hello

you dont mention your weight...if you are carrying excessive you will be a lot more insulin resistant.

exercise greatly improves your sensitivity to insulin, so make sure you get plenty of exercise, it reduces basal and bolus needs by about 25 to 35 % for me depending on time of year.

also theres a drug, i think called byetta, i dont really know much about it but i believe its for this use....

You could also try metformin, but run that by your doc first.

Have you tried your thighs and hips? They are easy with pens. Some do calves. You have to rotate well.

My weight is about 215 - 220, and I'm about 6'0". I think excercise will be a good idea.

Hips? I didn't know you could inject into the hips. Where, exactly?

A place that don't hurt :D I use to do half way down from the hip to the nee (thighs) but I can’t use that anymore as I don’t have much fat down there. Overusing a site can reduce absorption and give you wonderful bruises always worth mixing it up a bit. Don’t worry about your I:C if they work for you then that’s all that matters, really if you want to work at something look at your HBA1c and Standard Deviation (http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/m57.htm) . Exercise should be part of your daily/weekly routine keeps you healthy and eating a healthy diet which by my definition is a little bit of everything including bad stuff and the green stuff. These will all help to lowing your insulin resistance (i.e. i:c).
