I hate that the diabetes has affected your eyes. I've had it for over 36 years now. It's never caused any trouble with my eyes but I'm spilling protein in my urine and have some numbness in some toes and fingers.

Hi Debaroo,

Welcome from another Canadian . I'm a type 2 from British Columbia.

My late husband was legally blind for the last few years of his life, due to diabetic retinopathy, and I wanted to make sure you know about the income tax deduction that's available for people with disabilities - that includes legally blind people. You probably do, but I thought I'd ask because we didn't for the first couple of years. The CNIB informed us of it and when we applied, he received a refund of over $3,000 for the previous two years. The Canada Revenue Agency defines legal blindness as 20/200 vision or worse.

Hi Debaroo,

Welcome to the forums. As you can tell there are a lot of great people here with lots of good information and support.

I am not a diabetic, my son Thomas is. He is 11 and was diagnosed a week before his 10th birthday.

and karen thanks for the reminder of the tax paper i need to get that filled out. When your doctor fills out his part of the application, make sure he puts the date you were first considered legally blind, not the current date. Our doctor just put the current date until I asked him to change it, and that's the reason my husband received the retroactive payment.

Welcome Debaroo :)

This is a great forum and I'm so glad you found us. I'm Type 1 on an insulin pump. I am doing ok, for the most part, but i've only had diabetes for about 2.5 years. I'm doing my best to take care of myself, b/c I know how important being healthy is. It's something so many take for granted, but for many of us here it's a struggle. It's a struggle to eat right, exercise, and keep our blood sugar in good control. I guess it's our little burden to bear in life and all we can do is the best we can.

Anyway, I hope you will feel free to jump in and post anytime. I'm looking forward to your future posts.

Take care :)

Andrea

Hi Debaroo! I am new here also am have found the folks here to be great! I am also affected in my eyesight. My opthamologist says everything is ok but I am constantly reminded of my diabetes when I have to focus to read. My eyesight was so good when I was younger that the daily changes seem to affect me more. Anyway, welcome aboard, it is nice to have other newbies to talk to!
