Salad Wins!
Every single time I go to McDonald's for lunch, I tell myself on the way there.... I am ordering a salad, I am ordering a salad, I am ordering a salad.
So I get to the drive thru menu and there is the Big Mac looking at me. Begging me to order it. And usually I do, and then I spend the afternoon tired from high blood sugar...
well not today...I did the pep talk all the way there... and did exactly what I said I was going to do. :D I ordered a salad. Then I ate it without dressing all the way back to work. It was really good or I was really starving.
*pats myself on the back*
everyday I am seeing better food choices. I am saying no to things I would normally grant myself as a reward for whatever I could think of.
maybe I can do this afterall... :D

Good for you Crystal! Its hard to even drive by the fast food places sometimes, harder still when you go through and order, smelling fries all the way.
I try to avoid those places at all costs. I buy the bagged salads and bring it and toppings to work with me, so I'm not so tempted. Some days its easy...but some days the french fries call! I've never had a Big Mac, as I don't eat all the toppings, but I'm wondering could you have it on occasion and just throw away the bun?

When I am stuck having to eat at McDonald's (I try to avoid it at all cost, lol) I normally will order the Chicken McNuggets with ranch dressing and a side salad.
The small amount of breading in the Chicken McNuggets doesn't effect my BG much if at all.
I've never been much of a burger eater, so I don't really miss it all that much.

I toss the bread and eat the meat and all the filling and there are very few carbs that way. I use a plastic fork and knife and enjoy the only really good tasting part of the sanswich. That way I can have a salad too and still have a relatively low carb meal. Sometimes I have a small order of fries instead of the salad. No bread for me at fast food restaurants!

I love a big mac but not the carbs associated with a 3 bun sandwhich.. I take my own 5 carb a slice bread.. scrape it off onto my bread.. and it goes from 47 carbs to a doable 14. it isn't a health food moment.. but it tastes the same and when the youngest wants a happy meal here or there.. I am not left out just eating a salad.

That's one thing I love about In'n'out burger - "protien style" burgers. That way I'm not tempted to eat the bread - sometimes I'm strong & don't, sometimes I'm weak & eat some of the bread...but if I can go to in'n'out, I just order protien style & don't have to worry about it...and if I'm with friends, I just steal a couple of their fries!

I feel so blessed to hate fast food burgers.
Congratulations to you though, Cyrstal. You won that battle! Now off to win the war.

Big Mac's are my downfall. Thanks, now I know where I am eating tonight.

Congrats on your good food choices, Crystal! That's great.
I like burgers from some fast food places. Ever had Five Guys? OMG. But I do like the others who have posted. Well, I have one bite, bun and all, then I ditch the bun and eat the meat and condiments. Fries don't bug me in moderation, so I'll split a small with my DH. Their fries are too die for. Yum!
I also go to Wendy's and get one of their jr. cheeseburgers with a Ceasar side salad (both on the $0.99 menu). I treat the burger like any other one (discard the bun) and use my own dressing for the salad. Voila! A decent lunch for $2. Their chili is pretty good, too.
Depending on your part of the country, Carl's Jr or Hardees also has the low carb (lettuce wrapping instead of the bun) burgers.

As far as I can remember, the last time I had anything at a McDonald's was ... 14 years ago.

I just passed my first "in and out burger" test. I was picking up food for my family and chose the salad wedge (!) for myself. Not too thrilling but I keep telling myself it was worth it. My family has been very supportive since I was diagnosed months ago. Just have to be a big boy when they get donuts, etc!

Well done on the salad choice. Your blood sugar levels will be good.
I still occasionally eat at Mcdonalds. I worked out how I can have a big Mac, small fries, small chocolate sundae without my blood sugar levels going up. I have a blood glucose test, 5 units of novorapid, 4 units of Levemir. Then I eat the Mcdonalds and 2 1/2 hours after my meal I have 3 units of novorapid. At 3 hours I have another 1/12 units of novorapid. And the next day I take 1 unit of extra carbohydrate for dinner. I'm naughty but my blood sugars stayed under 8 last time except for a spike of 9 at (am the following morning), which I quickly fixed.
I think the burgers and fries might be smaller in Australia.

I am pleased you are winning the fight, but I always feel **** after eating this kind of junk food. I always avoid it as there are many other options when it comes to burgers :D.

The nutrition phamplet for the Australian Big Mac burger is:
Total Fat 25.5g
Carbohydrates: 25.5
It seems to be 2/3 the carbs/ fat

With the exception of one locally owned fast food place in my city, I totally avoid fast food. The place that I am referring to has the best burgers and fries. I let myself have one burger and a small order of fries once every six months if I desire it. If we want hamburgers at any other time, I make them at home where they are much healthier.

The biggest problem for me with stuff like Big Macs is the fat content and what it does to absorption.
I try to avoid McDonalds anyway and go to Wendys and get a chicken sandwich. My carb book lists a bun of about that size as 50g of carbs, and I have a side Caesar salad (avoid fries when I can), so I get away easy - a fast food meal with way less fat than a Big Mac, and I dont have to load up on my Apidra.

I eat at McDonald's on occasion. Actually ate their yesterday as we were out car shopping and got hungry. So we stopped next door to mickey d and I got two mcdoubles and a small diet, swapped the meat onto the other and tossed the extra bun. And better than their salads.
