Hello everyone, I am hoping that someone has some feedback for my situation. First off, i am a newly diagnosed Type II diabetic as of last week (10/07/08). A bit of the background, I had been drinking, peeing, experienced blurry vision for a week and finally decided to get it looked at, it turned out that of course I was diabetic.
So almost 2 weeks have gone by and the general bluriness went away however yesterday my vision chgd in the way where I can see distance however, everything a few inches infront of my eyes is so blurry that it is unreadable.
My question is: is it possible that my eyes and changing so that now I need new contact lenses?
Thanks for anyone's repsonse to this!!!

Hi there Andy and welcome to the forums!
I went to see my optometrist when I was first diagnosed, she did the test to see if there was any damage, then a general test because my vision has been acting up for about 6 months.
She asked me to rebook in a month so that I can get my numbers semi under control before working up a new prescription.
Good news is, no diabetic damage
Not so good new, high blood pressure damage
I will see what happens next month. Hope this helps a bit at least?
Once again, Welcome!

Andy,
It's not unusual to experience this type of thing. When I was DX'ed one of the reasons I was checked for Diabetes was that over a 2-3 week period my vision had deteriorated to the extent that I was not happy about driving at night.
When I got my Blood Sugar levels down, over a 2-3 week period my sight improved to the point that I did not need to wear my glasses at all, then over the following 2-3 my distance vision returned to pre-DX normality and I now wear my glasses for driving. I no longer wear them for reading/PC, that could be down to my age (42) or a slight improvement.
The general rule of thumb/advice is not to change prescription or get (new) glasses/contacts until your sugar levels reduce.
At this point I would not be overly worried, give it time, get your sugar levels down and things may well return to normal.

Same with me... About 2 weeks after I was diagnosed with Type II I woke up and I couldn't see far or close up... I tried my reading glasses and NADA...
I went to the optometrist and he said my eyes will level out within 6 to 8 weeks...
I went to the CVS and picked up a pair of 3.75 glasses for distance and when I need to read I take my reading glasses and put them on top of the 3.75's:D

I think my diabetes had been going on for quite a while before being diagnosed. My eyes were getting progressively worse and I have cataracts. I think most of the time my vision is getting better, although there still are some days when it is blurry. The opthomologist said that she couldn't fix my cataracts until my glucose levels stabilized for about 3 months. I'm not quite sure what that means, if that means that I have to have an A1C under 7 or 6 or what, but I go back in December, so I will find out. In any event, the doctor said things should get better as my levels come down and I think that I do notice a difference most of the time.

I am very recently diagnosed as well. I have always had good eyesight, until about a month ago. Most things are fuzzy now, but if I tell my eyes to focus, they will most times focus on things that are more than a couple of feet away. Anything closer than that, and I have to borrow my husbands reading glasses. My doctor said that he didn't see any damage, and it will likely fix itself as my BG lowers to a more normal level. I am still happy to get a result of less than 250! Working hard on that though, so it will hopefully be soon. I want my eyes back!

I am so happy, I can't wait till they go back to normal..

If I were you, I wouldn't get new contacts so soon...
You eyes will change and your new prescription will last a few days..
That's what happen in my case, I went and had my eyes checked and had a new pair of glasses made and 2 days later I couldn't see with them any more....

hi andy
3 years ago i was getting up every hour to pee, always
thirsty and very blurry vision,it took a month or so for
my vision to get normal.blurry vision is caused by high blood
causes the lenses of your eyes to swell.it get normal after a while when your glucose normalizes. neo

My goodness… I thought that I was the only one with 5 different pairs of reading glasses in my desk drawer to put over my prescription ones. I also wear progressive lenses and they slide up and down my nose as needed to change my vision. I have flare ups and then go back to normal… Today is a ½ blind day… I have mine balanced on the tip of my nose and the computer screen zoom at 200%.
I am blessed in that I show no damage in my eyes according to my Dr. Once I get through this I’ll be back to normal again.

Hello everyone,
I'm a recently diagnosed Type I, beginning of November, and my vision has slightly changed too, but as most of you have said it's a temporary thing. Funny thing is though my vision has actually somewhat improved! I can sit at my computer over an arms length away and still be able to read the screen without squinting, and that is a at a resolution of 1280x1024. I still need to wear my glasses driving though, and forcing my eyes to focus through them causes major strain, thankfully I don't have to go too far most days, just to work and back. Still going to go in and talk to my optometrist, even though I just had my eyes check in May. HeHe I'm one of those lucky ones though where I don't have have the drops >.<

Eyes change shape with glucose levels. So.. If your eyes were bigger due to inflated glucose levels and your glocuse istarting to get under control , your focal lenght changes.
Once you get your glucose pretty flat you won't experience this as much. Contacts or glasses do not really help because the focal lenght is always different.
I have gone through the same thing.

So, I've been back on Metformin for about three weeks and last night I just increased it from 1000 to 2000 (I neglected taking meds for a while because I got rebellious and stupid).
I''ve eaten very few carbs over the last three weeks, but my BG is above 300 today and my sight is for sh!t. Now that I have increased my Metformin, how long will it take for my blurry vision to return to normal?

I had lasix done just before my Dx, since then I have always needing reading glass but they say that is because I am "old", 47. But latley now that my sugars are getting under control my eye sight gets blurrey in morn and night. I go to eye doc next week to learn about this

I too have BETTER vision since I now have type 1. Coincidentally before I was diaganosed with diabetes my optomatrist(sp?) mentioned to me that your eyesight can improve with sugar. Along the same lines Prednisone improves my vision when I take it for asthma..why? Because Prednisone raises your sugar. I think the way it works is: If you have good site or are nearsighted your vision will decrease with sugar sinse sugar tends to make you more nearsighted. If you're far sighted however sugar can have a cancelling affect and improve your vision. I now drive without glasses. That wasn't true when I was "normal"

I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old, and when my vision changed drastically I went to the eye doc. He smelled the ketones on my breath and wouldn't even continue the exam until I came back two weeks later (side note-I had been drinking pretty heavy the night before). Now still wearing glasses, been dx for 14 years now and still experience daily changes in vision. (stopped drinking 11 years ago completely) Just went on the pump, hoping to normalize my numbers. Exams show no permanent damage just bad eyesight. Just hang in there, get your numbers under control and then have your eyes examined. As others have said, you don't know how long you sugars may have been affecting your vision. Hang in there, get a magnifying glass and watch your numbers.
