View Full Version : A Question Concerning The Uninformed...

Here is my question: Has anyone else had an uninformed person tell you that you did something to intentionally cause a low blood sugar just so you could eat something sweet? If so, how did you handle this person? The reason I ask is that I have had this happen to me more than once and it gets me really mad to have to explain my actions to someone else, even though I have done nothing wrong. Thanks !!!!

My 1st question is, "Who is doing the accusing?" If it's a family member, then it would warrant an answer, but if it's a co-worker or an acquaintance, then my attitude is you don't owe them squat.

I have had a situation happen where a supervisor didn't understand my lows, but felt (in all his infinite wisdom  ) that he had to say something about it. He rattled on about, "I understand you have a condition where you need to eat, but I have commits to meet." Needless to say, I left that job, and to this day refuse to take one in which people do not care about the health and well being of their workers (guess that's why I'm unemployed...lol  ).

On another note, my family has made remarks about me being a little overzealous at times (if my blood goes high, then I sometimes do overcompensate). In those cases, I take a step back and check what I've done. If I did do something wrong, then I'll explain what happened and why. If I don't feel I have, then I'll explain that.

Nobody's perfect, and with Diabetes, it's not an exact science, nor a text book case. If I do mess up, as we all occasionally do, I'll be the first to admit it. If I cannot explain why a low occurred, then I'll bluntly say so, no matter who it's to. Hope this helps! :D

That's ridiculous  . I would get annoyed by that too. And, excuse my french, but who the heck wants to intentionally experience low blood sugars...like that's such a pleasant feeling and experience to go thru! Obviously, whoever said this to you has very little knowledge about the disease and is ignorant about what the highs and lows are really like. I would take whatever "advice" you get from this person with a grain of salt.

I agree.... grrrrrrrr

Next time they do that (only if you don't like them too much), when they turn around, stick them with a couple of units of Novolog, come back in an hour and ask them if they like it! Grrrrrr.....

OK, don't REALLY do that... but that is my first irrational reaction. My second, more rational, reaction would fall along the lines of Dewey's comments. SQUAT I tell you, SQUAT!

Hi Ppls :)

Who ever that person was sure was not very informed.:( I've had people say that you really are'n't a diabetic becasue I see you eating food that contain alot of sugar that makes me  I've had people say you make yourself have sugar lows just to get sympathy from others.:( But as the others have said just take what anyone says with a grain of salt because we know better. :) Take care Cin :)

Depending on how cranky I was feeling, I'd probably tell the person to mind his/her own business, lol!

Cin,
I was raised by a sailor in every sense of the word, and I can speak pure honey, due to my southernly charms. given these two extremes in my character, I often wind up tempering my speach with the appropriate amount of sugar and vinegar, as the circumstances warrant.

All that said.... screw'em! Honey, be strong and don't feel it necesary to apologize or take emotional injury from someone else's lack of tact or true compassion!

If it truly bothers you, then carry some gluco-tabs with you instead of eating candy or drinking juice. Those things are nasty, and if they still think you're doing it so you can eat candy, let them taste one.

You can't control anything but your own actions in life and your own reactions to what comes at you.

Thanks Meech. I did ask her this: "Are you a diabetic? She said, "No". I then proceeded to say "Well, if you ever become one, you'll understand". Left her speechless.
PS Thanks everyone for your replies. It helps to have such wonderful friends.:D :D

When I was at school I used to get accused of making myself go hypo by one of my housemistresses, she thought it was because everytime I went hypo, she let someone else in my dorm go down with her to make toast and get milk, and whoever went down with her managed to wangle some for them to.... After a clinic she had to apologise to me as my insulin doses were too high with a mixture of intense sport, hence the amount of hypos...
