I was just wondering how many people here who are diabetic have a familly history of it?
I was just reading an article about the chances of someone getting type one or two and what factors can increase this chance.
I have diabetes in my familly but none of those with it are blood related to me, Unless some relatives had it many years ago that I don't know about.

I have T1, my sister has T2. Our mother had T1 and so did her brother. Their father had T1 also.
That's as far back as I know about, but it looks like I didn't have much of a chance of avoiding it.

We have no history of either type of diabetes in our family (mine or my husband).
That was one thing that just blew us away when Thomas was diagnosed last year.

When i was diagnosed every nurse or doctor that spoke to me (which was quite a few after a week in hospital) said "ooh, is it in your familly then?" i'd say 'no' and they'd say
" oh, thats odd.. unlucky you".
After a week of hearing that each day I ended up thinking yeah i must be unlucky if everyone else who gets it has a history of it. Now obviously I know thats not true.... but why on earth did all these stupid docs and nurses says that to me  It almost gave me a feeling of it being my fault. nevermind :)

I had no family history of Diabetes in my family, however Iron Overload was in the family and that put me at risk. Since I got diagnosed my mother was diagnosed (a few months ago) but she is in her 80's so I guess you could expect her organs to start going :)

I have a history of T2 on both my moms and dads side. My dads mom died of complications when she was only 47. Though she would not take care of herself. No one really knew she had it till they got the death certificate. Little bit of a shock to see the cause of death listed as diabetic complications (or whatever term they used, can't remember).
No T1 until me then four months later my sister was diagnosed as T1 (on my wedding anniversary). Sort of left are family numb for a while and my brother scared to death he would be diagnosed. I tell him now he has a greater chance of developing T2.
Hopefully my sister and I will be the last in our family. We both take good care of ourselves, though I have seemed to have had any easier time of it. My test results are usually better, even though she is more active than I am.

No history of any type of Diabetes in my family tree, maternal or paternal, and believe me we checked. So I remain the black sheep, and hopefully it stays that way :)

My grandmother and both her parents had it. In fact, my great grandma lost both legs below the knee to it. I am glad they caught me before mine is full blown.

It was me.....for a long time and over the last 10 years other family members decided to join me on the sweet treat disease!!!!
I use to feel special being the only one...now I have to share this with others in the family!!! at least they are all distant cousins...except dad and he pretends like he doesn't have T2..

When I developed it in 1968, I had a grandmother who had developed it a few months before I did and there was no one else. Now, many members on both sides of my family have developed type 2 diabetes as they have gotten older but I'm the only one with type 1. I guess gramps and I are the trend setters in our family. Hey! Next trend, leisure suits!

As far as we know there is no history of diabetes on my mum's side of the family. But my dad was adopted so we have no idea of his history.

Only family hx is of hypoglycemia. I'm the only one with diabetes (T1). Had hypoglycemia fairly bad for nearly two decades just prior to being dxd with diabetes.

No history of T1 or 2 on either side of my family. My doctor still asks me "are you sure there wasn't someone..."

lol, another thread I've overlooked...:D
My (maternal) grandfather developed Type II Diabetes later in life, but I was informed by the health care team that there was no correlation between the two. My mom sometimes experiences (symptoms of) Hypos when she hasn't eaten. Also, my dad served in Vietnam, and there's been controversy between the medical field and the gov't about whether or not Agent Orange can cause Diabetes in the veterans' children. After all, they did have me after he served...lol ;) :D (My dad did not have Diabetes, and was routinely checked).

Lucky me (NOT  ) I seem to be the only one in my immediate family with Type 1 Diabetes. We're not sure, but we think one of my great aunts in my Dad's family also had Diabetes, like I said we're not sure and we're not the type either.
My mum had T2 diagnosed when she was 80. Nobody else in the family had or has it that I'm aware of. I have T2.
