Yesterday, my Red Hat group had an early birthday dinner for me at Barleycorn's. It was my birthday thing, so I ordered a grouper fish sandwich and onion straws, unsweetened ice tea. I did not eat the bread that came with the sandwich, but it was a huge piece of fish, and I shared the onion straws. The fish was fried, but was lightly battered as were the onions. I did eat a few chips with dip, while waiting for the food. My BS was 78 before I ate, I used a fairly large dose of Novolog anyway. This was about 7pm....at 11pm, I was 95. Really surprised me, but I was happy. I went to sleep for about 3 hours and was awake for 3 hours (my BS was 105), then went to sleep again for a couple of hours. When I got up about 9 this morning, my BS was 205!!! Did it take that long for all that fried food to do that to my BS?

Oh Penny, we have all been there done that! Whenever I eat high fat, fried foods (sounds like you had a few) my blood sugar will rebound for hours. It can take up to a day for everything to settle back into the normal routine. You ate a lot of carbs and you had fried foods (chips, fish, dip, fried onions) as a chaser. Hmmmmm why weren't we invited??? :D

Hope things get back to normal soon!

I have heard that a high fat meal can slow down the absorbtion of the carbs in said meal, but in this case it seems a little extreme.

when I've had a high fat carb filled meal, I've seen fairly good numbers at the 2 and 3 hour mark only to find elevated levels at the 4 and 5 hour mark.

I wonder if it really wasn't just a liver dump since you did have the Novolog to "cover" what you ate.

Eating out has always been problematic for me; since I take Novolin R instead of Novolog, it makes it much more difficult for me to time the bolus properly along with judging the amount needed. I've take too much at times and taken too little at times. It's just easier to eat at home where I can be sure of what and when I'll be eating, lol.

I was just thinking, I also was over an hour late having my morning meds.....could that make a difference?

I've been reading about "rebound effects" and "dawn phenomenon" lately, do you think those would have contributed? My morning BS is always higher than when I go to sleep.
