View Full Version : Fractured My Arm :-(
Hello Again Friends!
And so my saga continues....I shall do a brief up-date for those who do not know me that well....
got diagnosed T1 in May this yr. Doing great for first 4 months then went back to work ( on a cruise ship ) and then slowly the intense work load and heavy excersise ( I'm a Dancer ) took it's toll on my body and ended uploosing a ton of weight and going hypo 2 a day and feeling like I was hitting rock bottom. Finally sorted out the hypo thing ( thanks to your help) and saw an Endo when we docked and had been progressivley doing much MUCH better....until wham.....fell over and SNAP goes my arm.
Bad break....had surgery last week...plates and screws and now just waiting for clearance to fly home.....:-( back to square one...home again.
I guess I just want to know...my fall was not that hard or bad and yet such a bad break. Is there any knowledge of weak bones in diabetics??? It just seems like I am weak...I don't know and need some advise if this is a side effect of this disease what precautions should I take??? Apart from the obvious of calcium....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Love from

My sympathy and gentle hugs!
I haven't heard of a particular relationship between weak bones and diabetes. You might want to ask your endo or orthopedic specialist.
My daughter (who was diagnosed with diabetes just before she turned 9) managed to break metatarsals on both feet 2 years later -- first one when dancing around the living room, then the other when she was running with her cast on (she was playing tag with friends and said she didn't want to be caught -- LOL -- something only a child would do with a cast on!). I asked the orthopedist if there was a relationship with diabetes and he said no.

My sympathy as gentle hugs as well!
I think something you'll find as you go along is that people want to link EVERYTHING to your diabetes.
Going bald? Must be the diabetes.
Can't sleep? It's the diabetes!
Break an arm? Well, you're a diabetic!
Bad TV reception? IT MUST BE THE DIABETES!!
What I'm trying to say here is, no. I highly doubt the break had anything to do with the diabetes. Simply an unfortunate accident. 10 years ago or so I shattered my left wrist just y tripping on the sidewalk. It happens.
I hope you heal well and soon! I'll be thinkin about you!

Aww, really hope your arm will be better real soon! *Gentle hug*
You don't need to worry about breaking bones being caused by diabetes. Some people just break bones easier than others, or sometimes you don't even need to land hard to break something, it's a lot about how you land or hit something.
I broke the scaphoid bone in my hand nearly 4 years ago, that's the first and only time i've broken any bones this far. And the scaphoid bone is generally quite difficult to break due to its placement... Ended up wearing a plastercast for over 10 weeks. What i did? Got mad and hit a wooden door soft enough to get my hand through:o I've hit concrete walls before and nothing happened:eek:
thank you for all your hugs!!!!! I can almost feel them!!!!!
Yep...Drummingfool...I guess you're right.....ever since I got diagnosed I due tend to panic and think is it related to my diabetes....but not in a bad way...I thinkk I just pay much more attention to my body and how it functions and try to make myself aware of the side affects of my disease without trying to get too scared!!!!! But breaking my arm really has topped off my year!!!! !0 weeks stuck in plaster is NOT fun!!!!!! Esspecially over Christmas and NWYR.....oh and forgot to mention it's my right arm and I'm right handed ....just for a laugh!!!!!!
Anyway....bring on 2009...hopefully it will be a more positive one for me!!!!
Hugs back at you all!!!!!!!

can't think of any reason why diabetes contributed to a bone weakness...muscular weakness, dizziness and loss of balance or sensation, yes, these I could see....sorry to hear of your rough year, Siri! you sound as if you are taking it as well as you can!

Siri, I read that you're a dancer... I know this is personal, but have you ever had an eating disorder? I have severe bone loss in my ankles and wrists because when I was a gymnast I stayed nice and healthy, but I grew 9 inches in 3 months one year and that ended my gymnastics career. I gained weight (I was 15 at the time) and figured I'd do something about it...so I became anorexic. I lost a long of bone stability with my eating disorder. If you've had that problem ever, then it could be due to that.
The other thing I like to equate weird bone fractures to is this... You know those dishes made by Corelle? They are touted as "shatter and break resistant". I happen to know that they are resistant to breaking, but not on my tile floor! If you drop one of those plates in just the right spot...shatter...all over the kitchen! Might be that you just hit your arm *in the right spot*. :(
It's most likely not diabetes related.

Now this is funny. When I broke a leg last year I was told by a few people it is the diabetes, eats away the calcium in the bones. Right, it was the 100 mph softball that broke it and I doubt the softball was short of calcium. Don't know about the bad tv reception I have though.

Siri,
Sorry to hear you are ending the year in a cast. It's a reall bummer to have a broken arm. I reckon the other's are right and this is not diabetes related.
One word of advice, if you have been given exercises for you fingers, do them. After the cast comes off make sure you do any physio you are offered or told to do. I broken my wrist years ago and had 2 screws inserted. Back then I healed quickly, the surgeon had told me the screws would be in for a year to life. Had the first one out about 6 weeks later and the second 4 weeks after that. I now have about 98% movement in the wrist, surgeon said that it was purely down to the physio and my determination as he expected me to have at most 10% movement (but probably less). So do the physio if any.
Have a gentle Irish (hug).

I broke my right hand too, but luckily i'm ambidextrous so i can write just as easily with my left hand :)
I really hope those weeks in plaster will be real fast for you!
Hey Keezheekoni.....
I don't mind personal questions atall......I have never had any sort of eating disorder......everr....if anything I am jelous of those girls whom have their curves...it's a struggle to keep the weight on if anything....many people often ask me that question when they see me in person too.....they often comment on how tiny I am....even more so since I got diagnosed....I guess eating better than I ever had before but still weigh less. It is fustrating for me at times.
I guess I will put down the fracture to one of those things!!!! And hope that next year will not be so traumatic for me as this yr was!!!!!
