My highest was about 27 mmol/l when I was diagnosed. That's about 486 mg/dl. Chris Needs, a late night radio presenter was diagnosed in 2001, and his blood sugar was 61, which is approx. 1,098. That's HUGE!!! Mine haven't been higher than 30, I think 27 is my highest

IDK!!! I've gotten several HIs on my meter before. Lately (like the last few years or so), I don't think I've gotten higher than 500 mg/dl (Actual was like 49-something).

In my daughter's case her fasting was 296 exactly on 21st April 08 at 5:45 am.
Her highest was around 500+ when she ate a coconut at night after her dinner after that she never looked at coconut.

I don't know what my BG was when I finally ended up in the hospital at diagnosis. I know that it was too high for the meter to measure so they had to wait for the results from the lab. The ER doctor told my mother I should be dead.
For the first 11 years I had no insurance so I stopped testing and didn't take care of myself at all. I spent those 11 years taking the same 2 shots a day, same doses I was given after being released from the hospital! NPH/R in the morning, NPH only at night. I'd often skip shots if I decided to go out with friends and stay over instead of going home. When I did see a doctor 11 years later, my A1c was over 15.
Once I began testing again I don't think I ever hit HI on my meter but I have seen BGs in the high 500s. The highest numbers I saw were when I attempted to low carb! All of the protein would finally catch up overnight and shoot my BG sky high. I gave that up fast. I'd also see some really high numbers when I was having problems with Quick-Sets after I got my pump.
My highest in recent memory was last year around Christmas when I woke up with a 496. That was after having an extremely scary low late at night that took a couple of hours to bring up - my worst experience since I started pumping.

After a year of being treated incorrectly, I was admitted to the hospital with a bg of over 1000. Like Liz, the doctors told my mom that they weren't sure if I would come out of my DKA coma and if I did, they weren't sure if I would have any kidney function left. As you can guess, I came out of the coma and my kidney function is fine. In the years since, I have been in the 400's but not often. Lately I haven't been higher than the low 300's.

I get fascinated when I hear of people sitting in the 20s/400s for years at a time, I wonder did you feel at least a bit sick or affected during that time? I sure know how the body can adapt to different levels, but at that stage you would surely have ketones a lot of the time, and I would have though the general stress on the body would have to be noticeable? Or did you really feel ok? I'd be interested to hear!

I felt like **** all the time but you do get used to it. I pretty much ignored my diabetes. After finally going to a doctor and waking up I realize that I was in dangerous territory a lot. I used to wonder why my breath often smelled really weird - it was that "fruity" ketone smell. I had no idea what it was at the time. I did drink a ton of diet soda and I used the bathroom a lot but it wasn't as bad as the time right before diagnosis so I didn't think about it much.
I am also extremely lucky that I have no complications. I got insurance and started going to the doctor in 1998 so I was 11 years out of control and now 10+ years trying to keep control. I have to say that I feel so much better now. The last 3 1/2 years with a pump have been the best.
My highest BG was 29.9! I wasn't taking any insulin at that time (the doc thought I was a type 2)! Never happened again since taking insulin everyday!
I was 600+ and in DKA at diagnosis last year, A1C 15+. So sweet even the vampires wouldn't touch me! Highest since was 303 after a meal of fish and chips. Potatoes (and rice) don't like me....

I, too, felt like pooh when I wasn't testing or taking my insulin. But, I felt that way so long that that was my norm. I don't know what complications are coming because of it, but right now, I'm doing rather well considering. I still have feeling everywhere, no unusual vision problems, and my heart and kidneys are still working. I'm terrified of diabetic complications, so I hope to not have any. After I got my body adjusted to being in the 150-250 range, sugars over that make me feel really sick. Gradually, I'm starting to notice ill feelings at lower levels. I think I can tell now when my bloodsugars are over 150.

I had symptoms for at least 18 months before being officially diagnosed as a T1, but I ignored them and hoped they'd go away. No, I did not feel ok. I was tired and grumpy all the time, I'd have to pee constantly, and I'd always need to drink something. It was a rough time and now i realize diabetes won't go away on its own.

When my numbers first started coming down my lows, which often weren't even actual low numbers, felt terrible. Eventually I lost my hypo awareness because I tried so hard to keep my numbers in range and ended up having too many lows. I think feeling horrible when I'm low is actually better than not feeling it at all, although things are so much better on the pump now.
I've worn glasses since I was in second grade but otherwise my eyes are fine. I go to the eye doctor twice a year rather than once. My kidneys are fine, no neuropathy or anything. I really want to keep things this way!

I only started noticing symptoms about two months before I was diagnosed. It started out just feeling run down so I dropped my hardest class to give myself a break. Still felt tired and run down but otherwise functioned normally. About 3-4weeks before diagnosis I realized I was going to the bathroom a lot more and was always thirsty. 2 weeks before diagnosis I was skipping work a lot and having a hard time with my everyday routine. The week before diagnosis I couldn't do anything except sleep, drink & pee. I was hoping I would die because I felt so bad. My mother finally forced me to call a doctor to make an appointment. I called on a Friday and got an appointment for the following Monday. That weekend was the worst. I was sleeping on the bathroom floor because it was too much of an effort to walk the few feet from my bedroom to the bathroom. My dad took me to the doctor on Monday, he asked me why I was there, told me to pee in a cup and said I had to go to the ER immediately without stopping anywhere.
So I first started feeling tired in mid-March and was diagnosed in late April. Before that I felt fine.

My highest reading is unknown:T My meter just greeted me with a HI, it has happpened a few times, but thankfully not often!
As for before diagnose. I didn't really feel any symtoms until about 1 month or so before diagnose. I might just have been a bit more tired a bit before that. But i was working hard on getting my drivers licence at that time so thought i was just stressed about that. I passed my licence test, and about 2 weeks later i was diagnosed:eek:

My highest reading was 21, which is not high. I had symptoms- hypos/needing to go to the bathroom suddenly for 8 years before being diagnosed, but when I kept getting my fasting blood glucose tested, my insulin tests kept showing normal/slightly raised results because my basal insulin was so good. I ended up with slight kidney damage, (kidneys were borderline between normal and not normal in the last test) from the long term results of not being diagnosed with diabetes and home deliveries from pizza hut. I wish the diabetes foundations would educate that what you really need is a HBAC1 rather than fasting blood glucose test which as I believe would help more people with slow type 1/ 1.5 get diagnosed before they damage their organs.
I thought all my sudden really bad symptoms were the result moving house to a dry place!

My highest blood sugar was 31 mmol/l and I lost a lot of weight and I was so thirsty, so hungry and so unhappy. Hey what kind of insulin do you take? I take "Levemir Flex Pen" and "Novorapid" by the need.I like to eat so I can`t control myself on celebrations. Then I have got high glucose-about 15,16 mmol/l. But it doesn`t happen often. My bottom blood sugar was 2.oo mmol/. I am not doing any sport but I ride bycicle often and it keeps my glucose well. I beilive that the medicine will be found soon, so we won`t worrie about it. What do you think? Are you an optimist?
P.S. I would like to chat with someone and to change my experiences within him. So write me if you are interested!!![/I][/I]

Around 25.66mmol/L or 457mg/dl on diagnoses. Most recent highest was 154.mmol/L or 277mg/dl only an hour ago :(. Just have to get back to it all.
Only went and got tested after about 6 weeks of feeling "not normal" massive weight loss, leg and foot cramps that wouldn't even allow me to walk and the nasty thrush and of course drinking approx 8-10 litres of water.....not sleeping as kept getting woken up my cramps that would make me cry....eventually started blacking out here there and everywhere and apparentlly saying weird stuff out loud which I have no recollection of!!!!
My A1C was 20.1 at diagnoses and my glucose was off the meter so don't know what it was........during my first week of diagnoses I then lost my vision for approx 6 weeks ( very blurry...couldn't see my hand in front of my face and normally I have perfect vision ) then my hair fell out....we think due to the stress. My Endo told me if I had left it even a few more days I would have been dead and that he had never seen anyone still alive and walking with my high A1c most people were dead or in a coma.
It took me approx 4 months to get it all under control and to finally feel like my former self!!!!
All of that just for a malfunctioning pancreas!!!!! I am still learning everyday and it's a rollercoaster of emotions. I got diagnosed May 9th this yr.

when i was diagnosed in marhc of 92, the machine at the ER said i was 32.6 (587), but since then, i had a diabetic coma (DKA), the ER doc said that i should have been dead because my blood was turning into crystals in my veins... the machine read 55+ (990+), but the blood tests came back at 78 (1400)... the doctors even thought i was going to have kidney problems and/or eye sight problems, i was even introduced to the smells of gangrene in various stages...
i suppose i should be shocked at my level but since i don't remember a thing for 3 days before i woke up in the ICU, i can't really learn anything from it... it was a doctor who said a diet i wanted to try was perfect for diabetics but he didn't say that after 5 days on the diet, all the insulin in your body was neutralized for the next 3 days, real or synthetic...
ofcourse this doctor is no longer a doctor, but still, i should have sued him, the ER doctor thought i was a suicide case and they put me in the psych ward for over a week... no shoelaces, strings, etc... bizarre, but at least the head of the shrinks (LOL) said that it was for the best, i was monitored and spent a lot of time talking to the doctors, i was deemed non-suicidal and my medical record doesn't say that i was in the psych ward... it's like it never happened...
boy that ER doc was nuts...
since then, i've had a few HIs on my machine(s), around the 33 (594) range... in the past few years, i think i've had 3 of those... one of which was at 4pm this afternoon... not sure why, but i'm not surprised, i was feeling lousy and i felt like i was gonna throw up... i wonder if it's from lack of sleep, i hadn't slept in 24 hours at that time (i have slept since then)...

I started having my symptoms in mid-August, the day before my dad's birthday. It was much worse, because I was on holiday, and I couldn't enjoy it. The day before I was in hospital, I was over at my friend's house and we were watching Hot Fuzz, and during that film, I went to the lav 10-20 times, and I fell asleep lots. Once that night, I had a little accident while I was sleeping, and I was so embarrased! I thought I had some bladder problem, so I'm happier I have diabetes rather than a bladder control defficiency. Strange, I know...

have hit >20 occasionally (probably once a month) after having bad food.......i wish i wouldn't do that again...:P
