Has anyone here been so low that they've gone into a diabetic coma? A lady on my local news was rescued by her young son when this happend to her. It got me thinking, because I can't imagine not noticing I was so low unless I was asleep of course.

I can't say that I've ever really been in a coma because of a low. I have had my level drop to 17 and be unconscious.

I haven't ever been too low to go inot a coma.. or unconscious though my bsl has been as low as 2mmol/l before, but my dad has had to be airlifted to hospital a couple of times as he was becoming unconscious.

... went so low I'd faint. That was with Diamicron. Had to eat a lumberjack breakfast and still, I'd faint less than 2 hours after it! I have no idea I low I went because didn't have a meter then. Scary!

Eri went down to 19 once...totally bypassed a seizure, and was out cold...paramedics said semicomatose. It took us forever to get her sugar up...even for them to get a vein(the first attemp burst the vein and blood ALL over)...but never in a coma coma.

(I've been in a coma...but that was from the chicken pox at 24 yrs old)

I sometimes get sleepy when my blood sugar is low. I remember one morning typing a letter and the Beverly Hillbillies was running on television. At the time, it came on at 9:00 in the morning. When I woke up again, it was about 2:30 in the afternoon and I was covered in sugar and orange juice. I can remember waking up for short periods of time and trying to get to something, so I guess I've experienced what you're talking about several times.

Hmmm just this weekend I had a 41 on Friday and 37 on Sat. None at the same time either or any symptoms...glad the doctor is going to help resolve this on Thursday....

I have never gone into a coma but have gone out completely a few times. The lowest was 5. I can remember the paramedic transmitting this information as I was coming around. That was a bad one. I also involved my youngest. I turned the car off and left the windows up. It was July and it took a while before my parents realized I was at their house. I was suppose to be at work.

When the episode were happening I could not tell. I would be fine and then come to 1/2 to whenever later. Though I have been 23 and functioning, well to a degree.

Going on the pump has stopped that. I still have some lows but can feel them coming on. Which is I think a relief.

Like Kim, I've been extremely low in the past. There have been a few times I was so low it didn't register  and I awoke surrounded by paramedics (which can be really scary - especially when your hear them talking about you, but you're not really "back" and awake yet...). One time, a firefighter woke me up by roughly massaging my chest (heart). I've also experienced a TIA (a mini-stroke), which freaked me out, cause I couldn't use my left (dominant) side until I came around. :( On the brighter side of things, it's been over two years since my last "911" though, so I'm pretty proud. :D

LOL Nancy. Me too. I thought I was the only one. Ever try holding a hospital gown closed and try to get to the bathroom with an IV dragging behind. Loads of fun. LMAO.
Kim, all I can say is WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dew, been there, done that. I hate that feeling of "being there" but not really there. (Did that just make any sense? LOL).

Darn! Looks like I'm going to have to get my blood sugar below 5 and over, what, 2,400 or so? All in the same day, so I can set some world records too - the worlds dumbest guy. Oh, wait, I already have that one! I once had a blood sugar reading of 7 in a doctor's office. I was really sick, but I don't know if my blood sugar was low because I was sick or if I was sick because my blood sugar was so low.

LOL....Eri was so upset they tried giving her the children's size gown(she's so inbetween that one and the adult), so they gave her the adult, I swear, you really had to look to find her anywhere b/c that was HUGE on here...lol...and when she got up to use the restroom, she had so much material to carry while I pushed the IV from behind while she kept saying "Mom...are you SURE it's not open in the back???"...like it mattered, it went around her like 3 times...lol.
Eri's scared me w/ the "being there, but not really there" thing. She's woken up to the same paramedic EVERY time(and she had a LOT of seizures)...so that was always reassuring to her(weird how it is always him, huh?)....

On October 20th I believe my father went into a diabetic coma and subsequently died. He was not taking care of himself and according to a friend of his he would shoot up and not eat. The neighbors saw him turn on a light in his mobile home around 10 PM. When his friend went to his house the next day around 3 PM my father was dead. What killed him I don’t know. My doctor said it was probably cardiac related but I don’t think so. After going thru all of his papers and seeing how many times he had been treated in the past year for low blood sugars and talking with the neighbors I think his sugars went to low, he passed out and never woke up. My father was 59.

I'm so sorry, Overclock. That must have been incredibly difficult to go through.

Please know that you have my condolences and support.

Take care.

That is so sad Overclock...I'm so sorry for your loss!
59 is so young. My dad is 63 and is T2 and I worry about him b/c he's been having a lot of hypers lately. One reason why I am looking forward to moving up north so I can keep an eye on him.

In 1984, five months after the birth of my second daughter, I went into diabetic shock and into a coma for 45 minutes. I woke up to the priest giving me last rites and asked him to stop. The next thing I saw was my mother, sitting next to me crying so hard......it was awful. I used to sleep right into seizures, but, ever since then.......if I am low, there is NO way I can sleep.
I don't remember anything past putting the kids down for a nap, and taking one myself. Untill I woke up.

I'm very very sorry, Overclock. :( It's such a shame that he died at such a young age, and there are no words that can really ease the hurt that you must be feeling. Losing a loved one (especially with the possibility of something that might have been avoidable) is Never easy. Please know that you have my very deepest sympathies, and you are in my thoughts and prayers. :(
