Diabetes by Bruce Bode, 6% of children with a father
who has diabetes and 3% of children with a mother
who has diabetes will develop type 1 diabetes during
their lifetime. Other rates are: identical twins _ 25-50%;
siblings of someone with type 1 _ 6%; and in general,
offspring _ 5%. This is in contrast to a general population
rate of 0.3-0.4%.

post so I finally got some accurate stats which I am now

What do you all think of the rates?? I wonder why men are
quite different than women in passing diabetes along?

100% of my Mom's children have diabetes. My half-sister has T2 and I have T1. Lucky us.:rolleyes:

I have Type 1. There is no family history on either side, which I'm happy about, of course. However, sometimes I wish some of my family members would be a little more aware of how much of a balancing act life is for me sometimes! They seem to think it's just a matter of taking shots and "watching what you eat".

Me too Sparkle. My family thinks I'll be good forever but I haven't had the right thyroid dose for 3 yrs and they aren't aware of what a struggle it's been.

Thanks for clearing that up, Sunni :) I have read something similar to this in the past. Looks like the gene for Type 1 must be more rampant in the male chromosome as opposed to the female. With such low percentages it's no wonder I'm the black sheep in my family!

I always knew it was a smaller percentage of inheriting T1 v T2. Though I did find out today at a Diabetes Forum, loved the title they used, that with both my sister and I being T1 that it would not be a bad idea to have my children have a genetic test done to see if they carry the gene. Which I knew I could have done. My question is though, if they say they have the gene but something has to shut their immune system down first, am I better of knowing they do have the gene or just keeping my eye on them like I already do.

I think if I knew for sure they had the gene I would be paranoid about every sickness they get, though I do worry know, it would be different.

I was just surprised the Dr felt that with my sister and I both T1 that this increased my childrens chance. I hadn't heard that before. Just my 2 cents.

There has been a recent article about Vit. D helping prevent
people who are likely to have an autoimmune attacks and come
down with Diabetes. My sister, whose a nurse, was reading the
article to me on the phone the other day as she was wondering if all our kids would be helped if they increased their Vit. D levels.
We both came to the conclusion, it couldn't hurt!!! <smile>

Hi SunniD: I already knew the rates my Endo had given
me many years ago. I had posted them earlier and
they are in the similar range as yours.

I find this peculiar. My 2 older Brothers got Diabetes at
age 4 1/2, 4 and me at a couple of months past age 3.
My Sister(twin of my oldest Brother)still does not have
Diabetes at age 53. I'm glad for that because she was
just dxd with RA(which I also have)and is not handling it
too good. It's just odd since we all grew up in the same
town, environment, went to the same places, ate the same
foods, etc. It must be she missed the bad spin of the
gene wheel. :D
Neither of my Parents, or any of our Grandparents or
anyone before us had Juvenile Diabetes. Of course, back
then people died, there were no autopsies, the Doc just
put down whatever was common I guess.
My cousin on my Mom's side did get Diabetes at age 6 yrs.
after us. And my second cousins on my Dad's side got it
long after us at ages, 6, 9 and 11 . All in the same family like us. Weird.
