Has anyone else had this problem?

When I failed my first 2-hr glucose test, my Dr. told me the endo he talked to wanted me to stop my birth control (ortho tricycline (sp?) because it could raise my #'s. SO I stopped, and we tested again in 2 months. It did help (my #'s were down 40pts), but now my new endo that I was referred to says that I really ought to get back on it, and deal with the higher readings because it is a lot better than getting pregnant right now.

(note, I was thrown off from being told I was type 1 not type 2, and really didn't think of all the questions I SHOULD have asked)

Is he talking about getting pregnant EVER? or just till I am off my "honeymoon" stage and am really controlled? I am reading online it is no different for a type 1 to get pregnant.. as long as it is done thoughtfully.. but he is giving me different vibes...

I am not currently looking to have kids as I am still in grad school, but if getting pregnant ever is an issue... ???

Has anyone else had a similar situation?? Any complications from being type 1 and pregnant or on birth control?
Thanks

oh, and I should say my A1c was 5.2, and my numbers have generally been really good (below 200) but sometimes it takes 3-5 hours to get back under 120 after a meal. So i am pretty well controlled now without meds or insulin. :D

Not a type 1, but I have seen plenty of threads on here by women who are Type 1 and have had very successful pregnancies. The next time you are at your doctor, ask him/her what the specific concern is, and discuss your future plans. There is also nothing wrong with seeking a second opinion.

I think he was just talking about right now. I'm assuming that he was thinking that because you are on birth control, you don't want to get pregnant. When you do decide to become pregnant, you can absolutely have a healthy and normal pregnancy as long as your diabetes is well control before and during your pregnancy.

I was on birth control for years - never did affect my glucose levels. In fact, my endo was the one who put me on BC originally so we could better track my cycles (which can affect your #s). Then my OBGYN changed my BC at will - again, never mentioned glucose levels.

I had 2 healthy pregnancies - is a little more work, but your
A1c sounds good to me. You'll have to check more frequently, and might want to consider a pump (if you don't already have one). Also, you'll be monitored (or should be) more frequently by your OBGYN.

Good luck!!!
