After taking my Lantus shot last night, guess what happened. Yep, dropped the bottle and it busted....ugh !!!!! Hope the insurance co has some mercy on me and let's me have another one. $20 is better than having to pay full price.

Oh SNAP. I did the same thing about a month ago. I had just picked up my new bottle too. It was not covered for me, so I had to pony up $67.00. OUCH.
I have a plan though. I am going to start picking up my new presciption on the day the insurance will let me. In a few months, I will have a backup bottle to rely upon.
Sorry about that, but I feel your pain! Does it smell like bandaids?

I have a couple of those rubber containers that look like the soda pop can holders that fit on the insulin bottles. You can find them at the pharmacy. (I think I got mine at Walmart) I keep them around the bottle so if I drop it, it won't break and also if the fridge is a little cold, it keeps it from freezing. They were cheap. Also great for travel.

Hey Nancy, I found some but they don't fit my lantus bottles. The lantus bottles are skinny. Do you have a link or a brand for the ones that fit the lantus bottles?

This may sound goofy, but I wonder if you couldn't use a small bit of mini-bubble wrap, or one of those tiny bubble wrap bags. If nothing else, you can use it and tape it around the bottle for extra padding, or even insert the bottle (with the wrap taped around it) into one of those insulin protectors. Probably silly, but it's better than spending $67 (or more) for a new bottle. Just a thought... :)

I've dropped my insulin bottles on many occasions. Every time I just cringe, but except for the one time I meant to break the darned thing they've always remained intact.
Is there like, less gravity at my house or something? Or maybe y'all are just extra tall and it's the increased velocity that does it?:p

I think I have dropped and broken only 2 bottles of insulin in 34 yrs. However, one was at night and I hadn't taken the shot yet!
We don't have all night pharmacies here. It was a bad night! After that happened I asked my pharmacist and she said to just ask my Dr. to prescribe 2 bottles. I did that and now I always have a backup bottle.

I broke a new bottle of Novolog shortly after my diagnosis of Type 1 this year. I still don't have health insurance and I'm trying to finish school (hence, no job), so it was painful emptying my piggy bank even more -- $75 flashing before my eyes.
I now keep the bottles in the original box that it comes in and have a ritual that prevents me from doing a repeat of that crazy night.
After all, juggling should be left to the professionals. ;-)
40 years of diabetes--my entire teens, college (don't even ask!), trips around the world, camping, hitch-hiking--not once have I ever broken a single insulin vial, out of the (I'll bet) over 1,000 vials I've used. AND--I am not the world's most delicate preson--I'm actually fairly clumsy. I have dropped them on occasion, but they just seem to bounce. I've had floors of lino, ceramic tile, wood, carpet, cement, dirt, you name it. I have never thrown one at a wall, however...

Thanks guys. Now I don't feel like such an idiot !!!!!!!!!!
Koblenz, yes it does smell like band-aids in the bathroom. eeeeewwwwww.........
Great ideas. I may have to try one of them.
Mick, consider yourself lucky. At least I didn't have to pay full price. The girl at the pharmacy mis-keyed the # of days supply in the computer so I only had to pay my co-pay($20).

Shoot Koblenz, I never used it on Lantus bottles. Good point. They are a different shape. I will look next time I am out and see if there in anything new on the market.

I have broken one vial in my now year's experience with type 1. The thing is, it was the first night! Luckily, I had already had the insulin in the syringe, so I was good until I got another one the next day.

OK, I got an idea. I searched around and could not find a holder for the lantus size bottle. So, I am going to try and make a little one out of some neoprene. I will cut up one of those neoprene soda can cozy's, and sew it so it will fit the lantus bottle.
If it works, I will post details so you can make one. Of course, my wife is a fashion major, so the sewing part for me is pretty much taken care of! He, he, he, he... :D
