Morning testing -- but WHEN?

I've made an interesting discovery in my own morning tests.

If I test 3 minutes out of bed, I can get a result such as 110 mg/dL.

But if I then repeat the test twenty minutes later, I can get a result as high as 175 mg/dL.

(I've sense found that doing about 10 jumping jacks and shaking my hands before testing seems to give the seemingly more accurate, higher result).

So the question is -- when you test in the morning, how long do you wait?

And a fun subquestion is -- what do you do with your empty test strip vials when they're empty?

Me? I'm saving them. I have to pay out of pocket, about 10-12 strips per day, and I guess it's a good reminder to get done with school more quickly, so I can find group health insurance under a job.

I usually wait until about 30 mins. after getting out of bed. If I don't do it then, I definitely test before leaving the house.

I test as soon as possible for my fastings. Sometimes it can be as much as 20 min +/- after getting up depending on what I have to do. I generally have some coffee in between my fasting reading and my actual breakfast/insulin injection. I have tried testing when I first get up and then again before injecting (can be as much as 30 min in between) and my sugars do go up. I find that injecting based on my fasting sugar is the best way to go.

I've noticed my blood sugars go up too, if I wait, so I usually check it as soon as I get up and then start getting breakfast and my morning insulin dose ready. I wonder which is the more accurate reading, the one taken just after I get up, or the one taken a little later?

Thomas usually tests about 30 min. after he gets up but thats about how long it takes for me to get up and start breakfast.

As for the empty strip containers, he and his friends use them as rockets. They put baking soda in them then add vinager and off they go!!

I usually test right when I get up, and again a short time later (cause I usually don't eat until later...gotta get moving first ;) lol).

I try to test immediately upon getting up in the morning.

I usually test anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes after getting up.

Some mornings I need a bit of time before jabbing myself in the fingers - know what I mean?

Rarely within five minutes. My wife says I'm like a bear coming out of hibernation and growl a lot when I first get up. Since I only test three days a week sometimes I forget at first and don't think about it till after a cup of coffee. Mostly I would say 15 to 45 minutes. Sometimes it takes two cups.

HMMM my routine is up out of bed, straight to bathroom, turn on light (shield eyes) prick finger and then search for glasses so I can read it!!!! BTW I got hooked up to a CGMS today...until Thursday.......

Belinda, cool! Do you get to see your glucose values continously, or do they save them for you as a "surprise" later?

I will return the monitor on Thurs and get results when they download it and I get back on Dec. 6. My understanding is you see it if you wear a watch....I am having lots of lows and they aren't at one particular time so hence wear the monitor to figure out what it going on....

Belinda, My routine is similar to yours...except exchange kitchen for bathroom and glasses on first. And, of course, shielding eyes for several minutes. Where is that coffee pot!!!

Depends on what is happening that morning.

Lately, the dog( a teeny, 140 Newfoundland) is insisting that I take her out and since I don't want to clean up THAT mess, get paper while I'm outside, then make coffee and PBJ sandwich, then test----15-30 minutes after I get up, I guess.

I test within 5 mins of waking up. Then I had a brain strom of testing an hour later too. What I found out was, my bg would raise over 100 points easy. If i woke up with a 120 I would be 220 an hour later and even more two hours later. I'm on the pump so I was able to fix that problem. I now feel much better the first half of the morning.

I test Eri b/f she gets out of bed(around 5:45 - 6a.m. latest)...b/c she eats her breakfast around 6:30...
She finally had a low reading this morning(73)...I have to get in touch w/ her school nurse so I can log her readings from after she eats lunch.

I can't wait for her to start her pump!!!
(sorry to keep repeating that!!!)
