does it give you carbs? This odd thought occurred to me today when I was going bushwalking on an Australian track and saw some flies?
How many carbs? I guess about 3.

Where were you walking mazea?

I guess 2.5g of carbs for a big blowie, but only about .8 for a typical house fly. I have accidentally swallowed a big blowie once. One it's in, it's in... a buzz or two in the stomach and that was it. :(

DH and I was walking up a small mountain as DH this afternoon. We are practising for Mt Kosiosko, the tallest mountain in Australia, in a few weeks. There are lots of flies at Mt Kosciosko so I was hoping I didn't swallow any. Then I would have to eat a horse, and that might require insulin. 2.5- yeah I think that would do.

:) Hi,
Can I throw up:D . I have swallowed my share of flies over the years or they have gone up the nose:eek: I grew up on a farm .The cattle attracted them.
The worst was in church while singing . You can't really gag and choke in the middle of church. :D
As for carbs I would say they would mostly be protien

:D In church if you eat a fly people might think you are having a religious experience.:D I hope that the fly came out quickly.

:) Hi Mazea,
Mt Kosciusko, is wonderful. I have been there both in winter and Autum. When do you plan to go?
They have been having snow falls late spring this year. I live not that far from there (about 300km's) and we get the wind from the mountains off the snow.
I have never hiked up there but have been to near the top in the chair lift. My husband has hiked to the very top (before he met me)
I love the snowy mountains We actually had part of our Honeymon at Jindabyne.
I hope you enjoy it. Let us know how you get on and yes there will be plenty of flies

I think that walking to Mt Kosciosko will be fun. I just have a strange sense of humor today. (about my diabetes). It must be because I only had half an egg on my hamburger today and not the whole egg. (Which is not a done thing) I cut a fried in water egg in half with a butterknife. It is one of the most difficult things to cut a cooked egg in half trying to keep the yolk 50/ 50.

Gosh those honey ants might be better than my skittles for a hypo treatment.

Bugs are primarily protein.

And some do taste good.
Air Force survival school taught me that part.

Yep, there's the answer. Insects are mostly protein.

The following is direct information from the calorie king book:

1 tbsp ant larvae: 20 calories, 0g fat, 0g carbs
3 tbsp chocolate covered ants: 140 calories, 7g fat, 2g carbs
3 tbsp canned bee maggots: 65 calories, 2g fat, 0g carbs
2 oz canned caterpillars: 60 calories, 2g fat, 0g carbs
1 oz rasted locusts: 35 calories, 1g fat, 0g carbs
1 oz raw silkworms: 60 calories, 2g fat, 0g carbs

Nothing on flies, though. Slightly disappointing. :)

I am disappointed about the calorie content of the chocolate covered ants. ;) I wonder if they would be healthier with dark chocolate. :D

I'm not sure what to say about that. I don't think I will accidently eat a caterpillar. Unless I am talking when I walk under trees.
