Welcome to Df, this is a fabulous supportive & informative forum.
Do you test your blood glucose often? This is the nest way to find out what works for you. Test first thing in the mornings & 2 hrs after a meal. Maybe keep a record of what you eat so you will know what causes the spikes.
Be sure to limit your carb intake. I have less then 100 a day which is controllable for me.
Try wolegrain bread & substitute sweet potato instead of white ones.
Visit & post often & you will learn heaps

Welcome from Texas. I too was diagnosed in July and finding this forum was the best "medicine" for me.

Eat by your meter... it's the only way to know for sure.
I'd suggest testing your fasting number every morning, and then testing both right before you eat, as well as 2 hours after.
Testing 2 hours after eating will tell you if you're high or not, but it doesn't really tell you what effect the meal had on you unless you test before you eat as well.
Once you've got it all down pat, you can scale back some on the testing.
I don't test nearly as much as I used to, although I have found an almost direct correlation between how much I test, and how high my A1C is. (the more I test, the lower the aic. Human nature...)

Welcome to the forums! Lots of great information and friendly people here.
As for eating, Jim gave you great advice, eat...test...and you'll see how different foods affect your blood sugar. I was given a goal of 140 or less 2 hrs after my first bite of foot.
Limiting carbs, esp. "white food" like potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, can help you maintain better control.
A great book for new T2s: "The First Year, Type 2 Diabetes," by Gretchen Becker. It has lots of good information on diabetes, diet and various treatments.
Post often, ask lots of questions, we're all here to help.

There's lots of T2's successfully low-carbing. It's a big change, but start reading up on it. It seems a proven way to lose weight and control blood sugars.

Welcome to the forums, you have found a wonderful resource for information and support.
I second Princesslinda's suggestion the Gretchen Becker book and moorejames' advice to eat by your meter is spot on.
Testing is vitally important in learning what to eat to best control your sugar levels.
Visit and post often,
