The foot is especially affected by diabetes because diabetes damages the nerves (damage can occur to the foot and not be detected). Diabetes also affect the circulation. Poor circulation can affect the ability of the body to heal when damage occurs. Those with diabetes are more prone to infection - the body's processes that normally fight infection respond slower and often have trouble getting to infections due to the poor circulation.
With that said...
Do you look after your feet on a regular basis?

ahhhh what do you consider "regular"? I give mine a once over about once a week. However, I'm really not too sure what I'm suppose to be looking for :) (Obvious signs of wear and tear?)

I give mine a "once over" every now and then...Same applies to any applications of cream, parrafin or any other forms of keeping the "tootsies" from cracking. Overall, I'm not as good (or "religious") as I should be about it, but I try to keep them in check. :whistling

I try to remember to look for cuts or abrasions that are not healing properly. Before I went on insulin I had a few mosquito bites that became infected (a normal thing in the Southeastern US). I did not realize that the poor, slow healing and terrible aestheic appearance of the large site was probably a complication of diabetes. I do not have any nerve damage so I though I was safe. I was wrong and I now am reminded to check by that memory.

I look at my feet after every shower. But then, i did that before i developed diabetes too, so this seems completely normal to me.

Put me in the "everyday'er gang" too. I check mine at night though. Gotta keep 'em in good condition so I can keep wearing my stylin' shoes.

Do you look after your feet on a regular basis?
Why? Are they going somewhere?
Yeah, I have one of the Fishline sized foot pokie things. Plus I make trips to the foot Dr. every 10-14 weeks. And I do self foot exams---not as fun as some of the other ones:( but oh, well.:whistling

I don't check them often. LOL just when I paint the toenails. Then again I am just pre-d so I don't know if it is that important right now for me.

We have always checked Eri's feet very frequently. (the child has a problem w/ wearing shoes...she's like me, poor kid, likes to be barefoot, but that shall change w/ a move to the north!!!)
Anyhow, the really weird thing is, she gets this one black spot on the bottom of her foot, looks almost like a planters wart would, but it is black blood....very weird. She gets it every so often. She gets new shoes every 2 months it seems(her feet won't stop growing...she's already in shoes 2 - 3 sizes bigger than mine!!!)...and especially after some of the cuts she's had on her feet and the blood poisoning this summer, checking her feet is a main priority.

I give my tootsies a look over when applying lotion to them daily. I also can't help but take care of my non-diabetic bf's feet as well, since he plops them on my lap while watching TV. He's almost as spoiled as my dog (almost...). :p

Everyday! Without fail. And, I might add that even that did not stop a blister from turning into an infection/ulcer that had to be removed. Want to keep them, got to take care of them. Pretty simple.

I rarely think about my feet if I am honest, always nagged by my mum to get them checked everynow and again... The only reason I check them is when my big toe gets sore (which is a sign tht its startin to get infected... I have no nail on it.... but thats the only reason)
