Accu-check Compact

Just saw this advertised on the tely..:eek: Never seen anything diabetes related advertised on tv before!!! :p

I've heard of it before, but some reason the whole drum thing and strips already being in the system seemed to have passed me by :whistling I never realised there was a meter that could do this before!

Does anyone use it? Is it any good? worth it? I would only have one worry.... that if I was low and needed to test, and for some reason a strip didn't come out.... i'd get all confused.

What are peoples views on it?

I was involved in a study group of two meters, one of them was the Accu-check.

Personally, I hated the thing, but that may be partially due to the requirement to use "alternate" sights at least 1x/day at which point I found out that I can't get much blood from.

For what it's worth, that's my opinion.

Eri uses the Accu-chek compact. She likes it b/c she always fumbled w/ the strips. She always keeps an eye on the number of strips left in the meter and is good about changing the drum.
It's actually the same meter her endo uses...well, between that one and the Accu-chek complete.

I don't like the Accu-chek compact main;y because it is loud and big. I like to be discreet when testing, and that just wasn't happening with this one. It also used more blood and took longer than I was used too.

I use the accu-check compact and find it good. It amazes me with the small amount of blood needed, often think I don't have enough blood but it draws up the small amount of blood and works. Its about the size of a small mobil phone and have often fooled people saying do like my new mobil, its not until I flip the flap they can see its not a mobil. I think the test time is about 8 seconds.

In the UK its £4.99 at superdrug which is cheap for a blood meter. Put the drum in and you are ready to go.

this shows the major parts of the outside and the inside

the part on the left is the blood meter and holding case for the doser(injection part), the 2nd from the left is the injector ( fits inside the case), the 3rd part is the penfill cartridge, 4th part is the novofine needle

I think the accucheck compact is the worst meter ever. It requires an entire 3 dL sample I believe. There are meters available now that only require a .3 dL sample (such as freestyle and bd). I will not ever buy another accucheck until they do something about that sample size.

I have the accu-check compact and personally I love it, its the best meter I have had, not had problem with the testin strips coming out of the drum or anything. ok the only problem is probably the chunkiness but hey ho.

Everyone has their own opinions of different meters its just a matter of trying to find the one best for you.

The accu-check compact actually uses a fairly SMALL blood sample, much smaller than the accu-check advantage which uses a LOT of blood.

That said: I HATE the compact! I bought one and used it, but then went back to the old reliable advantage as soon as I used up all of the drums.

* It is loud
* It is big
* It takes soooooooo long for a freaking strip to come out
* I always ended up out and about without any strips because each drum only holds 17, and I'd underestimate how many I'd need in a day
* I would waste at least 2 strips out of each drum because once they shoot out you can't wait until later, even if you pushed the button by mistake.
* if the drum container part of the meter accidentally opens (like in your bag or something) you have to put the drum back in and wait for the thing to cycle around until it figures out how many strips are left and this takes forever and it always happens when you're hypo.
* It has too many pieces. If I drop my advantage it breaks into ONLY two pieces, and is easy to fix. If you drop the compact the face cover thing falls off, the piece that covers where the strip comes out falls off, the battery holder thing falls off, and it's impossible to find all the pieces, and you have an ugly (yet still functional) piece of equipment.

I don't like accucheck period. I'll just leave it at that. The compact is not the only one of their meters I have tried, I have also tried one that was worse and completely inaccurate. I can't remember what model it was, but it was a blue case and I got it in Europe because I ran out of BD strips. I think I might have thrown it away.:hmmmm:

I think this thread could be about any meter out there and you'd probably see similar comments.

I use the compact & like it. To each his own.

The thing that stands out for me with the compact is that you have to clean the meter. If you do not clean it then readings are affected. This day and age you should not have to clean a meter.

Yep, my exact thoughts. Am not enamored with the old Compact but I like not having to keep up with strips and meter separately so I decided to give the Plus a try. So far very positive.

From the manual, "Caring for your ACCU-CHEK Compact meter is easy. If the display or the outside of the meter is dirty, wipe it off with a slightly damp cloth or cotton swab. You may use water, 10% bleach, 70%
alcohol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). If there is any blood in the test strip opening or if your meter displays the OFF message, follow these steps to clean it..."

Well, I guess the fact that I busted the test strip opening wide open actually helped me... No blood could get caught, so I didn't have to clean it.

(i tested the results against my old advantage meter after it broke... the results weren't effected)
