I don't traffic much on the Type 1 Forum but my recent interest in Vitamin D causes this post:

There is interesting research from Finland wherein children were followed for years starting in 1966 regarding Vitamin D intake. The group taking the vitamin D supplement had 78% lower incidence of Type 1 diabetes. Those with the lowest Vitamin D intake had a 300% increase in incidence. This is certainly not proof that the supplement "works" but how much trouble and expense could it be to take a Vitamin D supplement. This is especially prescient when you realize that a high percentage of the population is deficient in vitamin D. Now, for those of you already victims of Type 1 this means very little unless you have children. You might elect to do them a favor by supplementing Vitamin D and perhaps by causing them to enjoy a little more sunshine. The worst case you are out a few cents a day and probably stopping a vitamin deficiency.

Research this yourself and decide. GOOGLE works.

Vitamin D interacts with gene in MS: study (http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/02/05/ms-vitamin-d.html)The researchers think that this gene-environment interaction may affect the ability of the thymus to do its job of producing an army of T cells that identify invading pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, and attack and destroy them.

Normally, the thymus deletes T cells that pose the greatest risk of attacking the body's own cells and proteins.
