Hi everyone!

I was wondering if someone can help me with this.

I have this bar that has 16 g of carbs and has 4 grams of fiber,, now, I put 1 unit for 10 carbs, so for this bar it would be 2 units of insulin as 16 is close to 20 carbs, BUT now there is 4 g fiber, so basically It will become 12 g of carbs instead of 16, so really I should be putting only 1 unit of insulin. I am just scared that it wouldn't work and i end up with high blood sugar! Does anyone do that type of calculation with their carbs and fiber intake?

I always subtract fiber from total carbs or else I end up low.

Maya, my diabetes educator told me to only subtract fiber if it was 5 grams or more per serving. I don't know what others on here do. I think it is quite an individual thing and you have to find what works for you. For instance some people find that giving less insulin because of fiber leads to high blood sugars so they bolus for total carbs.
I hope this helps you a bit. Those of us on pumps have it a little easier as we can bolus parts of a unit.
Good luck - I am sure you will get plenty of answers with good advice. Hope you are able to sort it out.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your posts, so i just checked my blood sugar after i have put one unit of insulin as i decreased it with the 4 g of fiber, and my sugar was normal it was 6.2 and before it was 5.5.

Thanks again everyone :)

I do not subtract any fiber from the total carbohydrates because I find it doesn't work out for me.

Your best bet is to experiment and see which foods you can or can't subtract the fiber from.

Just make sure you are reading the actual nutritional data part of the label not the one with all the voodoo math net carb nonsense
