View Full Version : This is rather embarassing

Hi, for the sake of my own embarassment I will endeavour to be as discrete as possible:

What do you guys/girls do when your significant other is "spontaneously amorous" and you're not "prepared".

Saying "sorry sweety, gotta eat first" is such a mood killer!

Not something I've done...but...."honey, wanna play around with some ice cream (or other food item) first" Be creative with food.

What do you mean by prepared - as in, what is your current tactic for dealing with this exercise?

Me, I find that after some time I might be going low, so I might have a little juice at the start, and may just "work it in" some minutes in to have another suck on the, err, juice.

I keep small juices (you can get the small Popper juices in some supermarkets around here - 15g carbs, perfect hypo fix/bg lifter) in my bedside table and always some in my bag, so at arms reach at most points. I've learnt to test first if activity is on the books, as asking for a few discreet seconds to do so and perhaps have juice at hand is far less of a mood killer than saying halfway in "sorry, I feel strange, I really didn't know what my BG was/is and now I've got to go stagger through the house searching for my tester and then go searching for food, eat it, and wait for the effects to pass - hang here for half an hour and I might get back to you".

Oh c-r-a-p! I don't think I've taken the right approach with my initial question.

The key word was spontaneous - do you just keep a stash of candy readily available? or do I tell my hubby that he's not allowed to be spontaneous and leave obvious " love food offerings" ??

Have turned a lovely shade of scarlet!

AngelKitty, I think that's what Subby was trying to suggest - keep juice boxes (or something similar) handy - bedside table, near the hot tub ;) etc - because if the situation does come up a few quick sips of juice here & there isn't going to wreck the mood.

Not 100% spontaneous as keeping the juice around takes some planning, but much more spontaneous than saying, "wait, I have to eat" or bring "love food offerings."

So far, for me, "Just let me brush my teeth" is a quick stall tactic. It affords the necessary time to test and have fresh breath for my wife.

I hear ya on the spontenaity ;) But my hubby knows that I cant enjoy anything if my sugars are low! So i always have a little stach, like others have suggested, next to my bed and available so that if i need to I can quickly roll over and injest and continue ;)

There has been many a time that Half way through the act I have felt myself go into a hypo.....aaarrrggghh.....I pray that he will just hurry up:)

But if it was just as he was trying something on and i needed something I would just have to be honest and say something in a jokey manner like 'hey you'll kill me if I dont first bring my sugars up!!'

Thanks for your replies, some very good suggestions.
Also relieved to find that I'm not the only one - seems like we have to have a contingency plan for everything!
Ce la vi!
JediSkipDog - am still thinking about the bedroom food fiesta - could get messy ;)
Subby - have put juice poppers on my shopping list :)
Mortis505 - can definitely see myself trying your toothbrushing gig ;)
KCP am pilliaging the pantry as we speak to create my new secret stash :o
Bonbra - you made me giggle - I feel ya girlfriend ;)
Lizzy - my hubby is wonderful - but we are still young and wild :o
Cheers

All of the above :)

And love food offerings are pretty cool. Eventually the men in our lives learn, and "can I get you a glass of orange juice" is one of the sweet nothings that get whispered.

Thanks Erin,
I guess i'm kind of going though a phase where I'm hating the way Ds is intruding into every facet of my life, it's only been six months since I was dx - am still adjusting I suppose.

I hear you, the first 6 to 12 months was pretty hard for me too, but things slip into place and start to feel normal. I remember at that stage I found the diabetes very invasive and it actually made me feel quite uns*xual and unattractive, but it passes. the other thing is that your other half will also learn to adjust and realise that you might need to have a bite to eat, or equally a shot at some weird times; it does get easier x

I was married for 33 years to my late wife--all of those years as a Type 1. Once we figured things out (we were still in college), we just made the blood sugar thing part of what we knew we had to take care of. It did not intrude at all on spontaneity, but became a kind of invitation. When my wife said, "Darling, maybe you'd like to go nibble on a cookie before you come back and nibble on me" or "Sweetie, why don't you grab a sip of juice before grabbing and sipping me?" or something similar, we knew what was up--I suppose we developed a kind of shorthand system of invitation which was both safe and not mood-killing. With my new wife. she had a few early scares with my hypos, and now almost always asks me to test before suggesting we have some playtime. I have not found my diabetes or fears of low blood sugars to be an impediment to spontaneous sex.

What? Are you crazy? Do you know how much $$$ you'll make if you move to Australia and become the distributor for this product? There's incentive for you ;)

If you don't have hershey's syrup down under then you're doing it wrong; that's exactly where it needs to go. Or have I misunderstood this thread? :D

With me, a hypo makes me shake and sweat. There is a part of my wife that enjoys enducing this particular state - almost as if she considers it a job well done :)

And as for 'spontaneous', I love it when you young 'uns rub our noses in it! We have 2 young children and I have an insulin pump. I generally whack in an hours basal before we get going and tell it to buzz me after an hour. My wife knows that she's got an hour, and then (ready or not) the pump goes back on because I'll be putting the TV on.

On one occasion I left the pump on. Never again. One of us knocked it off the bed. Our bed is very high. It nearly hit the floor, but its fall was broken by the tubing and the site that was plumbed in to one of my butt cheeks. I lurched to one side and nearly soiled myself from the shock.

Bunjee Pumping Humping that causes lurching and then trumping is just NOT what you need. Don't do it, kids!

You did not misunderstand the thread, was canvassing advice.
Have warned my hubby that if I pass out during... um.. er.. "special cuddles" that he does not get an olympic gold medal for outstanding prowess, he should run for the glucagon pen!
Young uns - LOL - we have 2 young uns (aged 3 1/2 and 2) and we're in our mid 30's - didn't you know 40 is the new 30 and 30 is the new 20!
Butt cheek plug, nearly resulting in scat scene - I think you just scared me from considering a pump! (ever)
Bunjee pumping humping..... do you think the Olympic Committee might consider it as a new event?
Cheers

To be really boring for a moment in comparison to such fun (hey, long shift at work, I'm buggered), something I forgot to say at the start, a pump can be really good for this kind of activity. As the act of taking it off, or setting a temp basal down, means you have the ability to dictate your basal insulin from about 30 min from the point of starting spontaneously - both for 30 min+ olympics, and for the possible reactions afterwards. So if you take it off (very much recommended, Gary) you'll know that your basal is reducing in a while, and a small prime at say 1 hour if various activities get drawn out into a game of golf, might be enough to keep basal just ticking but not rushing in. A temp basal can then be set to reduce hypo risks afterwards if you really moved a mountain.

As well as that, I find myself that basal delivered as rapid dripped (the pump) does not sit dormant or "bunch up" in my system near as much as long acting did - it means I have far more margin to to be an athlete even with it still going, without such crashing lows.

Spoken not in the interest of pushing pumps or being a smug pumper, Just relevant food for thought.
