When your bg is over a certain amount, it does not help to exercise.

ohhh YES it happens to me ALL the time! sometimes i test my self 2 hours after i have finished my cardio! my sugar still at 15 to 20's , once I had to put insulin because i thought it was to high and will not go down, but guess what?? in the middle of night i had such a low sugar, it was at 2.4, so now i never put insulin even if its 22, the next day it goes down by it self to 5.5 even 4.5 too... so yeah it is normal, dont worry about it. My doctort told me its your body thats reacting after that intense work out. so just do what you got to do and dont put any insulin cause you might end up with a very low blood sugar level!!
Maya, didn't you just post this a couple of days ago in the thread : http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/exercise/36063-anyone-battle-sugar-highs.html

Next time you're low at bedtime, eat some glucose tablets. 15 carbs worth will pick you up quickly. When you exercise first thing in the morning (without eating/taking insulin) your liver will release stored glucose to give you the energy to do the exercise. (Too much glucose) I would have taken insulin to cover the high, but if I was still planning on exercising, I would've eaten something like a 10 carb yogourt first. Lots of variables.....

Thanks for your help Tanya, but now my sugar was 18.5 and its going down by it self to 14.4 i am going to chek later how it is, but the reason why I have not put any inslin is cause I have done that before and I endeup with a low, and thats what i am avoiding, so this liver release glucose thingy, does it reduce teh BG by it self after?

No, it doesn't correct by itself. Your exercise could be what is bringing down your bg (although your liver already dumped glucose) but it won't come all the way back down to a safe level. Your basal insulin is also working, so that could also be helping to bring it down slowly. I would definately be taking some fast acting insulin. If you're nervous about going low, take half as much as you normally would for the correction of a high, then see where you're at half an hour from now, then one hour from now, etc. It might also help you to keep a little journal about days like this, (the problem, correction, etc) for you to refer to in the future if similar things happen. Then you can see what worked or didn't work......if things get really confusing and screwy to you it would also be a good thing for you to have to show your doctor for help.

Hi Maya...I just re-read your original post and saw that you took two units of insulin at 11:15. I would wait and see what your bg's do over the next two hours at least before taking more insulin. The "liver dump" won't do anything to reduce the bg's btw. Good luck!

Tanya!! omg I don't know what to do now, because now my suhar just went down to 11.1. :S so should i really put insulin?

No more insulin. The two units that you took at 11:15 will continue working for up to 4 hours ~ peaking at the two hour mark. I'd be happy to see the 11.1 because that means that you're coming down exactly as you should be.

In the other threads you mentioned that you were cutting your Lantus dose, right? I'd say you need to inch it back up to a comfortable zone.
I like to keep my lantus low enough to avoid crashing lows during times when I'm not eating, but high enough to not have to rely on exercise to keep me down. Not an easy balancing act.

so you say I should increase my Lantus at night?

maya - i just read your various posting of the shots you took and what you ate and it doesnt surprise to learn that you crashed to 3.1 - you had several 'stacked' insulin doses going on and it sounds like you were just kind of guessing what insulin to take and working it out from a current blood sugar without taking into account what insulin you still have active from previous shots?
from reading your posts in general it sounds like you could do with learning a bit more about how your insulins work, how to get your doseages correct and then how to adapt for various scenarios such as exercise and stress as it seems like you are bouncing around a lot and having a permanent battle with your sugars. i would highly recommend the book 'think like a pancreas' by gary scheiner which you can pick up on amazon i really think reading that cover to cover will be a massive help for you.

If your blood sugar is over 15mmol you shoud not exercise as your liver pumps out more glucose when its at that level

i find that very much depends on the type and intensity of exercise you are doing. personally if my blood sugar is that high whilst i feel awful a brisk walk for a couple of miles, or half an hour swim (crawl) will bring me down, whereas running on a treadmill will make the problem worse. response to exercise is one of those things that is very unique to an individual, whilst sprint work and weights etc commonly raise the BG due to the prevailing adrenaline response, and aerobic exercise decreases, it varies hugely. doctors often recommend not to exercise when that high for that reason, but my endo, who treats performance athletes with diabetes is of the opinion that if you understand your own response to things and it is what works for you, then go ahead and do it.
the issue here is think is more that maya needs to isolate her basal needs, her carb ratios at different times of day, to understand the activity curve of the insulins she takes, to ascertain an appropriate insulin reduction factor for various types of exercise, and for longer aerobic work outs to establish a carb replacement factor.
