YAZ birthcontrol issues???

I just got a scary call from my GYN saying that they got a letter from my insurance company that I have vascular problems and that I should not be on YAZ. However I have never been diagnosed with vascular problems by anyone. So now I am freaking out because I have been on YAZ for over a year. My GYN told me to contact my Diabetes doctor to confirm this information and if this is in fact true I should stop YAZ immediately... Does anyone else know anything about issues with YAZ? I have read the "who should not take this" section on the YAZ website.

Do not freak out. Contact your insurance company and ask them how they determined your "vascular problem". That will give you a starting point for investigation. Be assertive with them!

Do you have any type of neuropathy? If so, that's probably what they're talking about with regard to vascular problems.

Also, if you're a smoker or are over 35, you should NOT take oral bc pills.

This is probably of no relevance but I'll throw it out there: one of my old friends was taken off of the pill because she had history of migraines. She said she was told by her doctor that she was at an increased risk of having a stroke because of migraines. She was not a smoker or over 35 either. I hope you figure it out.

Well, All of my doctors are baffled. They have never heard this. I called my insurance company and basically they told me that they sent out the letter as a warning. I have no diabetes complications and Im 24... so im slightly at ease, but I hate that all these drugs have such side effects. I dont want to be taking a birth control pill that provokes complications! Anyway thanks for your input! My nurse is checking with the diabetes OB specialists just to make sure anyway..

Your insurance company actively intervenes in your medical treatments? Is that typical in the US or elsewhere?

As far as I know, my insurance company called up my doctor only 1x, after I was diagnosed with T-2, to check the general state of my health (and to confirm the date of the diagnosis), and can call up my doctors only to confirm the treatments described in the insurance claim forms.

From what I hear it is; not sure about other countries.

I wanted to try YAZ too but they wouldn't let me either; the dr said I'd have to have blood tests for liver and kidney function every month or something. o_0

I couldn't take YAZ. Not for your reason, but it shot my blood sugars up by 50+ points. I had a lot of side effects on it too, and none of my doctors were ever sure if they were linked to the diabetes. I had migranes, insomnia, and serious mood problems. I was on it for 2 years, and I HATED it. It isn't really all it is cracked up to be with the PMDD thing either. It makes some people worse. There are tons of forums on YAZ if you google it.

Type 1 Diabetes is a "vascular problem." It's the same reason we shouldn't take many medications including Salicylic-acid preparations for warts. They are just covering their asses.

I've been haveing the same problem on orthotricyclen. I was diagnosed T1 five years ago and have never been able to get under control. No real help from dr's and i've switched a couple of times. I read earlier on another forum that women using insulin pumps such as myself have had better success on the NUvaRing so i'm calling the dr. tomorrow about. Anyone else heard of this?:confused:

whoaaaa...what? I have a LONG hx of migraines, and I'm on birth control and have NEVER been told this information before. Kind of scary.

ok, do women with Type 1 have problems with birth control pills generally? i want to go on the pill, but i don't know anything about this- are there complications?

I've only heard some can mess with your blood sugar, and it would stand to reason that some of the side effects could make your sugars go high. I don't have any problems; I think they just think T1 is a delicate condition or some **** and we shouldn't take anything that has the slightest chance of screwing with us. :rolleyes:

I've taken Seasonale and Yasmin and not had a problem.

The risk of strokes is higher if you smoke or have high bp. I do have migraines, but I was told that they're not the kind of migraines that the pill is bad for.
