So since Monday I've been kind of cutting back my carbs. Breakfast is usually around 90 grams of carbs, still high, but lunch and supper are down to 40-50, down from about 90 as well.

I always do my Novorapid before lunch, which is usually between 12:30-1:00. On Tuesday, yesterday, and today around 6:00, it seems my sugars start dropping. I tested at 5.4 and 10 minutes later I was at 4.6. Is this my Lantus, or my Novorapid causing the drop? I had a 25 gram carb snack around 3:30 today also. Didn't have one yesterday, or Tuesday.

not to sound simplistic, but do you have an insulin to carb ratio? makes it a whole lot easier to deal with different carbs in the system??

In all likelihood it is not your Novorapid: In theory it's done within 4-5 hours. I'd take a look at the Lantus.

Only way to find out is doing a basal test, followed by a bolus test. Basal test involves skipping breakfast, lunch and even dinner, testing every hour or so, then correcting your lantus dose accordingly. Bolus involves 30mins/2hours/4hours/6hours after each meal and correcting dosage. Always cancel a test if you go low or high and adjust doses.

Generally if you change food quantities and experience changes like this, your basals are off. As a rule, if you add food and sugars drop, your basals are too low. If you drop food then drop, your basals are too high. But with a long term insulin like Lantus, it's not so simple. It may be off for the afternoon only. Most of us tend to bottom out in the afternoons. Your changes are likely bringing this out. You may be fine the rest of the day.

yeah, i would check the lantus... i had the same problem when i started with the lower carb thing... thankfully my endo sent me to a dietician... i've seen her once already on jan. 29th and i faxed her my daily chart of food intake with carbs counted and insulin given for over a week's worth...

she put me on a 2.5:10 (insulin to carb for those who might not know)... it sort of breaks down to 1:4...

if you can't do a basal test, i suggest you lower your lantus by 2 units and see what happens...

it could also be that you're giving yourself too much novo for the amount of carbs you're taking... either because you don't know how many carbs you are actually eating or because you don't know how much insulin to give yourself per carb...

getting some kind of professional help in the I:C department wouldn't be a bad idea, but until you can, you can try lowering your lantus by 2 units for a few days, if your sugar level is still going low, lower the lantus by another 2 units again... but don't take my suggestions as gospel truth, it's just a suggestion..
