I love my mum even though she drives me nuts.
Today was her birthday so we went over for a drink.
“Here luv, have a beer” she says to me. I hesitate, then well why not, it’s her birthday I’ll have one drink – surprise, surprise, mum had bought “low carb” beer. I was so surprised I nearly fell out of my chair.
It was an OMG moment, could it be that my mum was finally “listening to what I tell her about my diabetes, I felt absolutely chuffed. :D
And.... then it happened....
Mum - “Would you like a slice of birthday cake?”
Me “Okay, just a sliver please, and I mean a sliver”.
The cake arrives, the slice is so thin, it’s transparent! It’s delicious (of course it’s delicious it’s loaded with sugar and carbs and I want more!!).
Mum – “Would you like a tiny bit more?”
Me – “ Yes please, just a tiny bit more, but I couldn’t have any more without some more insulin”.
Mum - “Well then, in that case you can’t have any more, I don’t want you taking any more insulin then you already are“!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Me – “But what about the low carb beer?”
Mum - “What about the beer? Don’t you like it, it’s from Holland you know”.
Me - "But it’s low carb!" (feeling quite exasperated and ... oh .. the penny is just dropping now)
Mum - “What does that mean?" :questionm
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHH
:argh: :argh: :banghead: :argh: :argh: :banghead:
Yep, mum had fluked the beer... and then the “dead fish stare “came out in all its glory!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for letting me share this little yarn with you.
Why don’t you share one back. It can be about anything that drives you nuts about your Diabetes .

Sorry 'bout that. We've all had the well meaning friends and relatives who cannot quite grasp the life we live. Be thankful she gets that more sugar equals more insulin even if the relationship to carbs hasn't quite clicked in.
BTW, was the beer any good? If so, brand please. :D

Angel,
My mother would always have been well meaning but really used to bug me about my weight, if she go a sniff of the fact that I was trying to lose weight she would go into overdrive about what I should and shouldn't eat.
When I was diagnosed I let out a HUGE groan as I was expect **** on earth from my mother, not becuase she would not want to help but because she would base it on no information. As it happened my Mother was visiting my Brother in the USA and I knew I would have 6-8 weeks hassle free. I happened to ask her to buy "The First Year: Type 2 diabetes" by Gretchen Becker and mail it to me from the USA (as I couldn't buy it in Ireland). She did that for me, but the best thing EVER is she bought a copy for herself and read it - it has been wonderful, she really has taken onboard what's in the book and understands how I manage my BG.
Perhaps you could get a book for you mother?

Yeah, the beer was good - Hollandia Natural Blonde. Also, Boags Classic Blonde is another low carb beer that is very good.
"more sugar = more insulan" my mum sure gets that alright, she was a believer that eating lots of sugar = diabetes!
Let me know how you like the beer :)

Sounds great, is the book published by Mills & Boon and have Fabio on the cover? Otherwise perhaps I could buy a copy and paste a picture of Fabio on the front cover!!! :D

Laughing tears here...:D :T
Even if I eat a lot I hardly use more than like 55 to 65 units per day. :D
Mum - “What about the beer? Don’t you like it, it’s from Holland you know”.
Yikes ! No insult towards our Dutch friends, but beer from Holland ?! That stuff is full of nasty preservatives and other things. :puke:
The beer here is still made according to the Bavarian Purity Law from 1516, the oldest food quality regualtion in the world. Reinheitsgebot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinheitsgebot)

I dont know what it is or why she does it but my Monster In Law will invite us for dinner , dont get me wrong she is excellent cook but not diabetic friendly at all, she will make cakes , have candies everywhere ,homemade breads and she makes these things she calls sputniks that are sausage and cheese on a thick piece of rye bread o.m.g they are great ....
but any way she makes these dinners that are not good for me then gives me funny looks when i say " no thanks i cant eat that or i have already had too much"..
after she tries to feed me sugar and carbs like its no big deal acts like i am rude for not over indulging in her cooking .....
she brings me a pile of books now glucose and sugar and how diabetics should eat because .........................
she is worried ABOUT MY EATING HABITS ??????
so i asked her if she read any of those , she said "why i dont have diabetes "

My mum is reading using insulin by John Welsh, sure it’s slow progress (I think) but she really has a better idea of the D stuff. She weighs everything but doesn't count the carbs :D.
Prefer manly sized sea bass. :D

Maybe Luke is right, she's "killing you with carbs".
As for the books, it's the thought that counts??? right??
Your last quote "so i asked her if she read any of those , she said "why i dont have diabetes " - that's your "dead fish stare" right there! XMenace - one order of dead fish stare here!!! ;)

You're making me want Weissbeer now. Or Dunklers Weiss. I'm with you on the Dutch beer...
I love Munich. I used to go a couple of times a year as the company I worked for at the time had an office out in Unterschliesheim. I remember getting absolutely hammered at a brewery right out in the countryside that was apparantly the oldest brewery in Europe?? Man alive did I have a bad head the next day. Happy days ;)
Sorry for the spelling throughout this post!

I think we'll get your mum the same book as my mum, I'm sure they'll both pay more attention with Fabio on the cover!!!!
PS That is a serious fish you've caught there "mucho dead fish stare" in that pic!

If you look at how he's holding it and the look on his face, I think that Shiftzor 'sleeps with the fishes'.
And I don't mean that as a reference to 'The Godfather' :D
