cataracts at 45

so i haven't posted in a while...and i'm asking if there's any of you out there that have had this done yet at this age-i'm having my left lens removed next Tuesday and, of course, i'm nervous about it...any encouragement?????

Due to a retinal detachment and surgery to repair, I developed a cataract on one eye at the age of 54. I had absolutely no problems with the removal or the lens implant. The procedure took maybe 15 minutes. I was given a mild sedative but was fully aware and of course my eye was anesthetized. I went home, took a nap and was fine to return to work the next day. The freakiest side effect is when the light hits that eye just right, I'm told there is a "blue" flash of light. So, relax and know that your vision will be much improved, especially at night!

Nothing to it. Had both of mine done three years ago. It is amazing as to how good you can see afterwards. No pain, only inconvinence was getting there.

I'm a sailor and spent a lot of time in the sun. I got them early too, but didn't have the surgery until later.

It's truly a snap. Quick, painless and you'll be amazed at the colors you can see afterward.

My eye felt a bit "scratchy" for a day, nothing you can't fix with a little cold pack.

I wish you luck and that it all goes well. I am 47 and got the glaucoma and cataracts diagnosis last month but not need for surgery yet. I'm still in the testing phase for the glaucoma. I'm upset that diabetes invited its friends to come live within my body.

I have not had to deal with cataracts yet. My father had both of his replaced and the results were amazing. He is now 86 and has had almost perfect vision for the 20 years after cataract surgery.

Hi I havent posted in such a long time, but needed some advice about cataracts. i have to return to hospital for an assessment on 5th March. i have a cataract in my right eye and were i work on a computer it feels like i want to keep wiping my eye to get rid of the blur, but obviously that wouldnt do anything. they said that it isnt 'ripe' enough yet to get rid of it, but i am dreading the procedure as you are awake, anything like that really scares me. any advice would be greatly welcomed. i am 39 and have also been told that i have one slowly forming in the other eye now....

I have had cataracts for several years -- diabetes related -- and had them both removed a week apart at Christmastime. I also have retinopathy which has not been addressed except that I have to keep my bg under control for 2.5 years and it hopefully will disappear. No pain from the cataract surgery and I can see better than 20/20 for distance. However, my reading vision isn't as good as it was before the surgery, but I got new reading glasses today, so all is well. Good luck with your surgery and don't worry about it. There is very little that can go wrong.

I'll just add my positive experience to what the others have said. It is a breeze. I had cataracts removed from both eyes (one week apart) and have never had such great distance sight in my life. (Prior to that I was extremely myopic.) I do need reading glasses however. While I was having the op lying in a reclining chair with blankets around me, I felt like I should be also having a manicure :) I suggested to the Ophthalmologist that he open up a cataract and day spa.

So enjoy the experience.

Closest i have been is lasix, 3 years ago. But that went extremly smooth and my eyesite went from 20/300 to 20/10 and still is 20/15. Only trade off was i now have wear reading glasses. But at 47 that was gonna happen soon anywho.
