I give 75 units at 10 pm every night before bed. Is this alot? I try to exercise regularly. My doctors don't why I have such a high tolance. I just want to know how much other people are using.

I have just changed from protophane to lantus and I am on 20 units once a day. The week I changed over I had a lot of hypos but now I let my sugars be a bit higher I'm alright.

I took about 50u Lantus for some years. Now I am on the pump and my current daily basal dose (made up of Novorapid) is also about 50u.

Going by most "rules" of insulin as per my height, weight, diet and activity level, I seem to have high needs. I have always seemed to have some insulin resistance but it does not appear to be weight or health related. It's basically a mystery to whatever professional I've seen.

Are you a type 1 BrightOrange? Have you tried a TDD (Total Daily Dose calculator to see what a predicted "normal" dose for you might be?

Here's some tools.

Free Insulin and Nutrition Tools (http://www.diabetesnet.com/diabetes_tools/)

Despite these calculators and rules, there seems a big variation between people in the run of things. I'm not sure if it's all to be considered resistance or whether some people just don't use insulin as effectively (or have a need for more) for other reasons. I have it as an on-the-go medium term project to explore other ways to get my insulin use down, for example metformin.

I take 24u Lantus and roughly the same amount of Novalog (fast acting insulin).
There does seem to be a lot of variation between different folks needs.

I've been on Lantus since diagnosis on 5/08 and I started on 10u which didn't do much good and I am now at 27u every night at 9, and my sugars are more stable.

Everyone is going to be different. When I was 1st DX'd I was on 16u every night before bed, and have since been scaled down to only 10u. You take what works for you, some of us need more then others to get the Bgs where they should be.

Ohh and I am on Levemir not Lantus.

i take 46u of lantus in the morning and 42u at night, so i take 88 units a day... i had a lot of lows when i was put on it in the fall of '08, but now i'm more normal, the only lows i get now are from not eating enough or too much humalog... usually because i give myself too much insulin for the carbs i eat, i keep thinking i'm eating more carbs than i actually am... but i'm still learning about the I:C thing...

but when my blood sugars are good, i give around 3 to 5 units of humalog...

My 12 y.o. daughter is on 50 units of Lantus at night. She also takes about 46-52 units of Novolog daily, spread out among breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner shots. Puberty is a b*tch.

When I used Lantus, it was 8 u in the morning and 8 u at night. I used about 9-10 u per day of fast acting insulin, about 3 at each meal.

My insulin dosage has stayed pretty much the same for nearly 40 years. It was about 10 u higher when I was a teenager and ate more.

Last time i took a basal insulin, in my case Levemir (haven't used Lantus since 2004-2005 before i started pumping), i took 48-50 units of Levemir every evening before sleep. I'm rather tall, and a tad bit overweight, but my job is indeed very active. Lately i've had to lower my pump basal with several units because i've gotten even more active:eek:

26 units at night.

I take 38 units of Lantus at bedtime. My total daily Novolog units are close to the same, around 35-40 units spread out over the three meals, varying depending upon what I am eating.

Some Type 2 folks have insulin resistance to varying degrees which will require larger amounts of insulin. Everyone is different.

I am currently taking 24 units once a day. But it varies with my level of activity and my behavior towards food.

Hi Scholle, welcome to the forums. It's a good group.

Post again in the Introductions area, so others know you are here.

I took 22 units when I was on Lantus. I'm on 18 units of basal now through my pump.

I get a pretty level basal coverage with 26 U in the morning and 24 U in the evening for a total of 50 units. My mornings present the most problem, I suspect due to the morning Lantus starting to fade at the 18-20 hour mark. With the split dose however, there is always some Lantus working.

My 13 year old son is now up to 27 units at bedtime and his humalog varies depending on with meal it is.

20-24 depending on what's happening the next day. I used to be on anything up to 48u about 4 years ago, but now I drink a lot less, eat a lot less and exercise a lot more.

I use 14 units in the morning, but my BG is again high in the morning these days. I wonder if I split a dose should I take 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening or 14 each time?
If 14 covers my basal, 7 units won't be enough

Definately don't take 14 in the morning and night, you could accidently kill yourself! That's double the dose in a 24 hour period. (One time I mistook my humalog for lantus and took 48 units of humalog instead of lantus by the way. The ambulance picked me up. LOL)

I used to take Lantus in the morning and would wake up with high sugars. Now I take it 8 pm and I wake up with great sugars. One thing I learned the hard way though, is you need to know how sensitive to one unit of Lantus your body is. One unit of Lantus makes an 80 point, yes I said 80, in my blood sugar. I take 48 and a half units of Lantus. If I take 48 units my blood sugar will run about 140 all day which is too high, but if I take 48 units that my blood sugar will run about 60 all day which is to low. 48 and a half keeps it at 100!
