Its my first time being properly sick. I have a cold/flu thing. Though I got the flu jab and a chill at the weekend (stupid lack of AC meant a door was left open but i was stuck near the door.

I'm aching and I was hypo at 3.3 but I didn't notice it :-(

I didn't sleep much and I've been watching star trek voyager all day. I took 8 units instead of 6 and i will take 12 or maybe 13 now at dinner. I have no ketones though my sugars are a little lower (due to the extra insulin)

I feel dizzy but thankfully my dad is here to take care of me

Any advice?

Gosh Joe, I am sorry you are sick. Tis the season..... bleh.

Eat soup, get lots to drink and take Tylenol every four hours. If you find that you are not recovering well or you have a cough that keeps you awake, go to the doctor and get checked out.

Sadly, flu's just take time and rest. I hope you feel better soon.

I definitely second the getting checked up if things don't quite go away. Sadly, diabetes can mean you are more prone to secondary infections and the like, and they may not go away as easily by themselves. Hope you feel better. Keep an eye on your BG. And watch out for ST: Voyager. Neelix is enough to raise anyone's BG. The doctor too. IMHO.

Sorry to here Irish Joe you're under the weather (ILL) with diabetes we tend to suffer more, what works for me, get your-self a pack of Max strength lemsips, and plenty fluids, keep you-self warm, hopefully you'll be out and about in no time.

Failing this please see your Doc.

All the best my friend, get well soon.

Well nuts, Joe. I'm sorry to hear you are sick. Thank goodness your dad can come over.

Sleep whenever you feel tired, eat chicken soup and drink lots of liquid. Sometimes sugar-free popsicles are nice.;)

The main thing you have to worry about is throwing up. If that happens, watch your sugar level and insulin dosage carefully because it's hard to keep juice down if you go low. It's a balancing act for sure!

Feel better soon,

Mich

i got the flu shot back in november, and i was lucky not to get it this year, so far (*knock on wood)...

i did, however, get a nasty cold from my dad back in december into january, and i took tylenol cold/flu caplets... since it has the tylenol you need to bring down the fever and chills, it was a good choice, also, the caplets are coated in a special cool burst sensation thing, making the throat feel better as well...

i don't have blood pressure issues (or at least i didn't have it at the time, i don't know if i have it now), so taking these pills was ok, also, caplets/pills tend to not have sugar added or sugar alcohols either... check the ingredients and the warnings/contraindications on any meds you take...

keep warm, drink plenty of fluids and eat when you can, try to keep meals small and many throughout the day, even if it's soup and a sandwich... as for the insulin, check your blood sugar before your dose, then eat, then inject based on what you ate... my endo told me it's always better to run a little high when you're sick rather than go low...

Sorry you're sick Joe. Continue to monitor your BG levels and be careful to get enough rest and drink plenty of fluids Without it, you'll be fighting the illness much longer along with a greater chance of developing a secondary infection.

Diabetes often leaves the immune system less stable, so we take longer to heal, and can be more prone to secondary infections.

I also took the flu shot in October, and thankfully the flu hasn't touched me, but I did pick up a nasty cold last week and while everyone in my home also had it, they have all recovered nicely, but I'm still here, over a week later, with oozing mucous and phlegm when I cough. I'm trying hard to fend off bronchitis. It seems like every time I catch a cold, it develops into bronchitis. Again, that's the Diabetes having a hand in it. My blood sugars also shot up a bit over the last couple of days, which signaled to me that I have an infection in my system.

DH told me if I don't significantly "clear up" my problem by tomorrow, I should visit the doctor to see if an antibiotic is needed.

Firstly what is Tylenol?

I definitely second the getting checked up if things don't quite go away. Neelix is bearable but I really like the Doctor. He's one of my favourite characters :-)

Sleep whenever you feel tired, eat chicken soup and drink lots of liquid. Sometimes sugar-free popsicles are nice.

I am quite restless and am trying to relax all day.

The main thing you have to worry about is throwing up. If that happens, watch your sugar level and insulin dosage carefully because it's hard to keep juice down if you go low. It's a balancing act for sure!

Yeah I've indoctrinated my dad that if I cannot eat or get sick that he has to take me to the A&E to get on a sugar drip

My blood sugars also shot up a bit over the last couple of days, which signaled to me that I have an infection in my system.

I noticed that myself and then sunday was a tiring day so it must have taken the chance to pounce when my shields were down... (oh sweet lord I'm watching too much star trek... I'm
not even a trekkie..)

I should drink more liquid but swallowing is a bit painful.

Thanks guys :)

(((IrishJoe))) I have nothing to add except get well soon! Get lots of sleep and fluids. I know there's a bad one going around where I live that makes you sick for months; I sure hope I don't get that! D:

:) Hi Joe,
Sorry to hear you have the Flu, Sadly the Flu shot doesn't cover all the different strains of the virus.
Everyone has already given you great advice.
I'm pretty sure Tylanol is Paracetamol (Panadol) and that is what I would be taking to help fever and aches and pains. It also helps me sleep.
Hope you feel much better soon

ahh I'm taking a suitabe pain killer.

Question - is it usual to feel more hungry? I've been taking extra insulin today a total of 33units vs 22 units normally (eg instead of 6/10/6 I took 8/13/8 and then 4 but I left my lantus as normal.

I have found that since I have gotten sick, my insulin needs have definitely increased, but my appetite for several days was absolutely nil. I lost 4 pounds since last Wednesday because I was just too sick to eat much. I'm on the mend now. I can tell I'm on the mend since my appetite has returned somewhat, but still not like it usually is.

More insulin can definitely make one feel hungrier. Why it didn't do that to me, I don't know. I just know that my BG levels were elevated even though I wasn't eating very much, so I increased my insulin accordingly to pull my numbers down.

And yes, Tylenol is the same as Paracetamol. When I was overseas for the first time three years ago, that's when I learned that, lol. Caught a cold while on vacation and was offered a local version of cold medicine with paracetamol as one of the ingredients. I just thought Tylenol was Tylenol everywhere, lol.

Thankfully not. Week after next I'm going to the UK to see my GF but I'm detouring to find somewhere to live. And the Job doens't start until April. Although I've yet to hear back in terms of how the Occupational Health assessment went.
