Hello everyone, my name is Darla

I am guessing I have type1 cause I am 51 and overweight.

I found out about 2 weeks ago or so.

I am on Lantus 90u at 9 pm
Humalog kwikpen before meals because of spikes.

My story is a long one and still dont have all the answers

I have been sick and going to drs for more then 10 yrs. I have been dx with many things, but I still go to more drs because I didn't agree.

So In 2005 I was dx with fibromyalgia
I am on disability for many problems, I wont go into them all

But now I wonder how long my BG have been high, I have complain about being sick for many yrs.
and first words were always how sick I am after eating and how I had to go lay down.
So much muscle pain
hard to breathe
left hand is asleep
I said I am gaining weight to fast and I am skipping meals cause it makes me feel bad.

over and over to different drs

well, guess what, when you overweight, all they say is lose weight you'll feel better

Well did find out I have hashimotos too, I take 4 grains of armour a day. but was on synthroid for 20 yrs

My liver tests have come back high,
I have high cholestoral (off crestor now, dr thought it might be cause the muscle pain)

Next week I am doing quite a few bloodwork tests. So I will know more then.

But when my sugars are closer to normal level, I have no muscle pain. I havent been in anormal range yet
but if down below 140

I am trying to watch the carbs, but still learning what to eat. I am not veggie eater. soooooo sigh....

My daughter is type1 so I thought I could do this but when I took care of her it was a sliding scale ..not a carb thing. So that doesn't help me.

so I read and read on the internet to try to get this under control. I will do it.

But I am struggling with carb cravings at night when my insulin is wearing off, BG start rising, I do know when they do I want sugar
I don't do any reg because I am about to do the lantus shot. Didnt want them to mix.

The dr said to e-mail him with my log every 4 days
so I will.

ok enough for now I think lol

I do have a question, my daughter is on a pump, but she keeps telling me I am taking way to much insulin, but I tell her I am fat and she is not. lol

Or is it cause our insulins are different?

Thanks all:D

Hi Again, Darla.

I have a couple of suggestions for you since it is the weekend.

Go to your nearest bookstore and buy either THINK LIKE A PANCREAS by Gary Scheiner or else USING INSULIN by John Walsh.

If you are a type one, you need to understand that there are two tyoes of insulin: Slow acting like Lantus which takes care of the insulin you need just to stay alive even if you don't eat. The second type is Regular, Humalog, Novolog and other faster acting insulins. These are used just to lower the blood sugar after meals.

In a type one, who has NO insulin, the basal is the underlying insulin that keeps us alive. The fast-acting insulin is for lowering blood sugar if it is too high and they work pretty much seperately.

Sit down with your daughter who is on a pump and have her explain things to you. March 10 is too long to wait.

Between her and some reading, you will have a list of questions for your doctor when you go.

Don't worry. It will all make sense as you go along. By the way, if you turn out to be a type one, it is caused by autoimmunity and has nothing to do with your weight, though extra weight can make your insulin requirement higher due to insulin resistance. Your other problems, such as thyroid (Hashimoto's) and muscle pain are probably related.

Hi Darla and welcome to the site.

Isn't getting older fun.It seems you hit 40 and its the fast slide.

Well did find out I have hashimotos too, I take 4 grains of armour a day. but was on synthroid for 20 yrs

Welcome to that club, I have hashimotos, too. A lot of what you do for diabetes is similar to what you should do for hashimotos. I was diagnosed at 34. The problem there was my primary. He failed to give it a name just your thyroid is a little under active take these pills. No big deal, I could do that. Fast forward 7 years to the prediabetes diagnosis, I go to an endocrinologist and learn my underactive thyroid has a name! I research it online. It can do what  . I also learn I probably should have started seeing an endocrinologist back when I was 34 and following a similar diet plan. Fast forward another 3 years then I'm T2. I've been here 3 years now.

I understand it more now.. Lantus is for basic control and humalog is for food spikes
I would bet dr will put me on 2 shots of lantus a day or change the insulin all together.

Thanks all for helping me get it, more then I understood yesterday.

Things were different when my daughter was dx 20 yrs ago, thought I could understand it but it has changed.

She has had type 1 for over 20 yrs and is in perfect health. A credit to her. She is motivated b her 9 yr old son.

I am anxious to see what my bloodwork will show. I know it wont be good. But I see if I try hard I can reverse it.

FYI Darla, yes, Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age. Mine did just in time for my 53rd birthday!

Good luck with getting your blood sugar controlled. It's hard work, but worth it!

Hi MssWho and welcome to the forum.
You've definitely come to the right place for helpful and friendly advice.

(It seems diabetes isn't picky about what age you are!
My nephew was diagnosed at age 6 with type 1 and I was diagnosed with type 1 at age 36!)

Darla,

Welcome to the forums, the first while can be overwhelming but it really does get better and easier. I'd highly recommend a book "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes" by Gretchen Becker. It's easy to read and very informative.

Visit here often, ask lots of questions and you will feel much better soon.
