Is this more common with diabetics in general, or type 1's?

Been doing a bit of research, and it seems to suggest it's very common with type 1's, and there has been a commercial on TV about it as well.

That is what prompted me to look it up and ask around.

In the TV commercials, it is said 80percent(4 in 5) of diabetics will die from heart disease.

Is this just a scare tactic or something?

We just have to be determined to be part of that 1 in 5 that doesn't die of heart disease. :) That is my plan anyway. I believe that is why the doctor has me on cholesterol medication - to give my system a bit of help. I do my bit by trying to exercise as much as possible.

eat healthy, take care of your blood sugar levels, and do aerobic workouts your entire life and you will be fine

I was diagnosed at age 6 and my parents watched my carbs very closely, but there were no meters in 1968, so we only knew what my bg was 1x/month or less. As a teenager, I ate whatever I wanted and had to drop out of college after two years because I went nuts on Pepsi and Oreos. I must be just stupid or something. I started watching my bg's when the first meters came out, but by that time I already had protein in my urine (first signs of kidney disease). At age 38, I had a quadruple bypass. After my transplant in August, my surgeon said she bent two needles trying to suture two of my arteries together! I have never excercised. I take Pravastatin every day. Don't be stupid like me. Excercise and eat low fat, low salt and keep those bg's in line. I believe the statistics are a little overwhelming due to the many aged type II's who refuse to change their lifestyle in their declining years (I know three of them right now).

My endo told me a type 1 has the same chance of incurring a heart attack as a normal person who has already had one.
