View Full Version : Recommended Cases?

My doctor just put me on Insulin, so I now find myself carrying my frio case (with Lantus and Novolog), needles, and my meter. Right now I carry it all in a fancy plastic grocery bag.
Can anyone recommend a nice case that I can carry all this stuff in? I would like something compact, but with enough room to carry all this stuff. Something with a little style would be nice as well. I am looking for something for everyday use (back and forth to work).
Thanks,
Steve

Yes, hows this for glamourous - what I use for my pump gear (bits n bobs and backup syringes etc) is the padded case from my girlfriend's leg shaver... it's like a makeup case, to unzip and peel the roof away is really useful. I searched high and low for something else, but it really is perfect! So a little soft makeup case may be another option.
About the frio - I used to consider a constant frio good practise, and in hot to very hot weather, (lets say +34c / 93f) where potency is officially meant to get affected, I think it's a good idea. Even so, it would likely take some time to lose potency, or get blasted sitting in the sun or something. However....
On talking to a pharmacist I trust, and finding study information on the web, it appears that once taken from the fridge, the best thing given temperatures below 30c, is just to leave it out of fridge/frio. The loss of potency was generally seen as something like 1% at 30 days, left out of the fridge. Insulin is supposed to work better at room temperature, too, although I must admit I never noticed a difference between cold and room temp insulin in its action.
You may or may not come up against an issue: 1ml vials of Lantus, that are not used up in a month. What I suggest is to get "3 ml penfills" instead if possible and suck the insulin from them, usually this will mean less wastage if they need to be chucked after a month (which they recommend you do, regardless of temperature).

I have the Frio, but its rare that I "activate" it. :)
I'm lazy! I like the pencil case idea!

Ok, cool (ha ha), I should have thought of that before assuming you were using it to keep them cooled down ;)

They make very small backpacks so you are hands free and aren't trying to pack this stuff in a pocket. Women find small cases for purses, but I guess guys have it a bit tougher. I think purses should become fashionable for men!!!
I guess if I were a guy, I would find a side pack or pouch to carry my stuff. No need to carry your lantus unless you are away from home during that dosing.
