Hi, I am new and came to the boards with lots of questions. I have had very dry skin and hair for a while and thought it was related to hormones. I got tested for that, and the doctor said I had signs of insulin resistance. I recently randomly checked my blood sugar after eating a meal of pizza-I know, bad-and it was 219. I am wondering if I should go to my family dr. (last time was obgyn) and get more tests, or just chalk it up to a spike due to too carby foods?!

It is definitely time to go to the doctor and get some blood work done. The sooner you do this the better. If you suspect it, you should investigate it for your own well being. Insulin resistance is the beginning usually. Let a professional tell you. I have seen threads here about dry skin although it is not an issue for me. Research that and you might get answers about your dry skin...
Welcome and how smart you are to come here looking for answers...
Yep. MUCH drier hair and skin for about the past year! I wish I had known ... I am at that perimeno age though so I just figured, like you, it was THAT.

I take it you mean you haven't been formally diagnosed as diabetic?
Definitely go in & get checked out. Even if a "normal" person eats that many carbs, they should never have a reading over 200. Get to a doctor asap.

When you go and visit your doc, ask him to order an HbA1c from the lab. This will show what your 'average' blood sugar has been over the last 3 months. This number will be very telling to your doc to help in a proper diagnosis. ;) Good Luck!

Me, too. I never associated the two of them. I even asked a derm about the dry skin/patches - but I didn't have them at the time.
As far as I know, it's never normal for "normal" people's BS to go that high after eating. It just means the insulin you're producing isn't working right. I would go talk to the doctor if I were you! Getting it under control will help with the skin and hair, as well :)

Wow! I am new to this and I did not know that dry skin and hair was part of it. I, too, am perimenopause and just chalked it up to that. Of course, I live in Colorado, too, which is dry. However, for the past year even my breast have been itchy. Yikes! Sorry, to the guys who are reading.:o

Hmmmm. I have dry skin and hair and occasional bouts of extreme itchiness with no rash. I am newly diagnosed at pre-diabetic. I told the doctor, but she didn't make any connection. Now you've got me wondering.
I just bought Olay, "Body butter ribbons" body wash. Tacky name, mostly vaseline, basically, but CHEAP and effective ... and fast to use. Really seems to be helping.
