I'm under the impression that it causes brain damage and they aren't sure how much is required to do that. Until I know more, I've decided it's best to stay away from it.

Well, maybe so, but it's a serious concern to me so I don't use the product. You have the freedom to act in your own best interest. I simply wish to do the same.
lg, post more info if you come across it. I know there was a link about two weeks ago with the evils of Splenda, but there are sites that like all over the WWW about how everything and anything is evil...
I have a cousin who cannot consume aspartame--Gives him BAD migraines. He belittles and bemoans nutrasweet whenever he can, for as long as he can (he says it should be banned). I recently pointed out to him that millions use it with no ill effects, and he took the typical "they won't have any side-effects until they get brain cancer"-argument...So I asked him if he had any allergies, like, maybe an allergy to nutrasweet or phenalynine.
My point being, some things are bad for some people all of the time. I mean, there are millions of people who can't drink MILK. Still, I would like to see any evidence about splenda, since I seem to be consuming it more and more.
There are stories about the damaging effects of every single kind of artificial sweetener. The way I look at it is that we know sugar is bad for us, we're told that the various articial sweeteners might be bad for us, so I'll take my chances with them. I try to spread out the risk by using several different ones. My mainstay is liquid Splenda, but I also use some Sweet 'n Low, some liquid Stevia, and some aspartame.

My guess is maybe because it is new and a lot of times when a new product comes out it tends to be a little more expensive at first then lowers in price as time goes on.

I use Splenda, but sparingly. I am not a big sugar fan anyhow, so there are few foods that I feel I need sweetener on. I have made a Splenda apple pie and it was very good.

I think Jenny has it right. Any new sweetener is premium priced until Store Brand versions are able to hit the shelves. ;)

Until the patent rights for Splenda have expired they are allowed a monopoly on the production of it. This is an incentive for companies to go through the exhaustive Research and Development costs in order to get something approved for distribution by the FDA. Remeber when Nutra-Sweet (Equal) hit the market? All you youngin's can just sit quietly, we know you don't. It was expensive and for 10 or so years, you didn't see a store brand or generic version of it. That was do to the company having limited time only, exclusive rights to produce, and distribute the product. I've read that, on average, it costs around $75million to get something through the FDA so I'm guessing it will be some time before we see a generic version of Splenda.

...until then, crack open those wallets really wide!
What I know about Splenda...I won't use it either.
One of my goals is to stop cravings....when I have those substitutes all it does is teak my craving and I want something sweet.
