How old were you when you were diagnosed with Type 1? What are the age ranges to be diagnosed?

buzzborne
12-13-2004, 02:35 PM
I was 11 when I was diagnosed with Type one, when I was in hospital there was this boy my age and he had been diabetic since he was 3 months old.
Dad was diagnosed early 20's and his brother later 20's so the ranges can vary.

Around 10 years, 9 months, 19 days. Odd thing is, even though I've had it over 36 years, I still have the maturity of a 7 year old.

Nowadays ppl of any age can be Dx'ed with Type 1, whereas years ago it was supposedly rare to see anyone over the age of 20 with "Juvenile Diabetes" (hence the term).

:o If I can get my foot out of my mouth I will try to explain what I meant in an earlier post about "drug or alcohol related". Sometimes alcoholism can be a factor in the onset of TI, my husband's aunt is an example- she was dxd when in her 60's. And by drugs- I didn't mean street drugs. Some rx drugs used to treat illnesses can cause TI. Don't remember where I read that or what the specific drugs were.
I apologize if I offended anyone. :)

There have been a 'few' changes. My 'Doc' sobered up enought last year to suggest putting me on the pump!! Never paid much attention to the pump before (shows how up to date I was) It sure makes life a lot easier.
Right now, here in texas you renew your drivers lic. on your birthday every 4 or 5 yrs, I'm keeping a low profile trying to slide into 2005 before one of us 'expire' :)

I was diagnosed at 27 years old, the day after I defended my Msc. I also joke how diabetes was a greaduation present. "Master's degree to the left, diabestes to the right". "Congradualations, now here is your diabetes".

I was also surprised about all the T1s on here diagnosed in their 20s and 30s. But it might be that most 5-10 year olds aren't really going to start reading a diabetes forum. It might have to do with the nature of the form and not the nature of the disease.

I did take a different antibiotic this summer for a sinus infection. I usually get a sinus infection every couple of years and need an antibiotic to make my head stop pounding. But I was also running an excessive amount and maybe that caused stress on my body. Although I was also quite stressed the last year finishing school, leaving friends, girl friend, moving back home, etc etc etc. Ok, maybe it was the stress that brought it on.

Clint
12-28-2004, 06:44 PM
my drs think it was the stress of my daughter being born. She was extremely colicy(sp?) and I literally slept maybe 2 hours a night for 2mo straight...

I was actually 9 when I was diagnosed, a few weeks before my 10th birthday. I remember getting a 'get well soon' card from my entire class back at school! My mum is convinced I developed diabetes thanks to taking some steriod tablets for an asthma condition a few months earlier.

I was dx'd at age 19 as type 2, and thrown on pills for 10 years. I had an old school DR who figured I was not a kids any longer, must be type 2. My Dr did not do blood work, and did not push me to check my BS at home but once or twice a day. When I did check it it was anyplace between 200 and 400. I seen my DR 4 times a year to get my scripts refilled. I moved in 2000 thus making me find a new DR. Told my DR I was type 2 and he also started me on pills. I got sick in 2002 and lost about 30 pounds and had a BS of 500 plus when I went into the emergency room. My dr then moved me to insulin and still said I was type 2. I found this site in Jan or Feb of 2005 and heard all this talk about ENDO'S. First time I had ever been told about an endo. Went to an endo and he told me I was type 1. Took me off the oral medication and changed my insulin. He then went ahead and put me on the pump after I decided it was time for it. He sent me to my FIRST EVER CDE and I was taught carb counting. The endo I hated, he would pick a fight with me about the way I logged my blood sugars for him to read. I went on the hunt for an ENDO that I liked and found one. She did a full work up of blood work and told me that I was Type 1.5. I love the Endo I have found. My A1C have not been better under her care.

I remember staying at the childerns floor b/c I was 12 turning 13. It was so fun. I sneaked out the room and went the long way to my friends room and got caught. I also was stabbing oranges to pratice inserting the needle.

18 years ago, when I was 22.

Woke up one morning and drank a 2-liter bottle of pepsi - the whole two liters. I then got my mom up and told her something was very wrong.

We went to the doctors office that day and it was all bad news from there.

The good news was it happened quickly, (I blame it to a reaction to a tetnus shot) and I have since maintained very tight control - despite the crude insulins and large needles (started on R and NPH. Oh God, does anyone NOT have an NPH horror story?)

Tried pills for less than two weeks and went into the phsicians office and told him we had to fix this. Being high was horrible!

I was diagnosed Type 1 at age 12, 24 years ago. It was about 10 days before Easter. My mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer a little less than 2 months prior. Have always thought it was the stress that triggered it at that particular time. That's not to say that I wouldn't have developed it at some point anyway.

When I was 16, two months, exactly, before my 17th birthday. Got to spend the week in the hospital being yelled at by a mean nurse. She was angry that I kept eating my snack before she came to test my blood sugar. I was hungry and didn't know it ment I had low blood sugar (after being 600+ when DX'd).

I was diagnosed 29 years ago when I was 25 years old.

I had recently gotten married, gotten a new job, and moved to a new town. It was like a triple-witching thing, I guess. I am 6' 1" and my weight had dropped 35 lbs in two weeks to 140 lbs. My boss told me he thought I had diabetes after I described my symptoms.

I had no idea what diabetes was. My boss told me to go to the Drs office right away. On the way to the Drs office I stopped at McDonalds, ate a Big Mac, large fries, and a chocolate shake. Got to the Dr. and told him that I might be diabetic. First question he asked was what had I eaten that day. I told him about my stop at McDonalds. He yelled at me: IF YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE DIABETIC WHY DID YOU EAT ALL OF THAT? I asked "are hamburgers bad for diabetics?"
