I'm finally starting to look into exercise. I seemingly have hair-trigger insulin sensitivity, and long have carried much sugar with me wherever I go.
Today I spent a couple hours walking around stores. Blood sugar before: 99. Blood sugar after: 96. :) Basal rate: 50% of normal.
A couple weekends ago, I had five hours of moderate physical activity: A co-worker and I were busy unracking, carrying, and racking servers and other network equipment. (It's similar to moving furniture.) During that stretch, I held my blood sugar in the 70-110 range the entire time... without having to resort to soda even once. It was wonderful, feeling so normal -- almost like a non-diabetic. Basal rate: 33% of normal.
If I eat before/during increased physical activity, I must reduce my bolus (a la basal) and use slower insulin -- i.e., when I'd normally use Novolog, I should substitute R for at least some of that.
I've had a few mistakes, hitting as high as 205 post-exercise... for which an intramuscular shot seemed to work even faster than normal.
And I've had a handful of 165-185 post-exercise readings. I obviously still have room for improvement. However, I'm already enjoying my increased physical activity, reduced soda consumption, and decreased hypo concern/frequency. :)
I wonder what basal I'll require for more-vigorous exercise...
