I will be traveling to the UK from the US (5 time zones east) in July and my physician is unsure as to how to adjust my Lantus insulin (32 units) that I take at bedtime. I also take Humalog with each meal. Anyone have experience with the evening dose of Lantus going east and west ?

Can you just take the Lantus 5 hours later?

What a coincidence, I have to get up 4 hours early in about two days for a trip to Germany. It's nothing to do with jet lag (only 1hrs difference) but just because I used to get up very late. I'll probably shot up my regular 2 hrs early tomorrow and two hrs more early the next day so.... Any better ideas? I'm really not comfortable with it no doctor has ever told me that it's a problem...but the peak time of the NPH I shot in the evening is like about the time that I will do my morning shot...

I have never been able to get clear answer to these specific questions for the docs!

Hi...my name is Amy and I'm new to this site. I'm just now having problems with my BS (blood sugar)...had a physical about 3-4 months ago and they said the BS is fine in my blood test, but I'm in the process of trying to lower my tricyclerides which are high. I have had gestational diabetes twice in my pregnancy and it was diet control (I had a hard time staying away from what I crave for--sweets). Well, I delivered my baby last year of June and everything went back to normal. Right now, I'm looking for the right foods to eat (I don't like vegtables very well...only green beans, corn, potatoes, rice, broccoli and cucumbers.) From what I understand is that potatoes and rice is bad because of the carbohydrates. Does anybody eat any kind of pasta for dinner? The reason I ask is because my husband always wants pasta (rice or mashed potatoes) with the meat and vegt. for dinner. I have been trying to eat less instead of a big meal but I get really hungry between breakfast and lunch...lunch and dinner. When I tested my BS after eating sweets, I noticed that I get very sleepy and tired and thought I was going through pregnancy again (of how I remembered it with the gestational diabetes)...checked my BS and it turned out to be 208 after an hour...2 hours it dropped to 97. Could this be that my body is slow at producing the insulin? Well, I immediately cut out the sweets and started drinking less coke. Any advice, I would appreciate it. I'm starting to like this website...looking for help I guess. Also, I am overweight due to the pregnancy and it is hard for me to lose weight (must be the way I eat foods). Sorry for such a long letter here. Thanks.

Hi Amy,

Yes, it does sound like you are having problems with your blood sugars. From what I have read and understand gestational diabetes during pregnancey often is a precursor to diabetes later on in life. So you get ahold your doctor and ask for a HBA1c and Glucose tolerence test to be done before you see them. It takes two of these to dx, but it may confirm it or point to something else, you never know.

Now that's out of the way we can talk about what you can do in the meantime. Like you vegetables are not my favorite food and making most meals consist 2/3 thirds veggies is tricky. So like make two or three veggies for lunch and dinner and it makes it a lot easier. As for getting hungry inbetween meals, have a snack of 15 carbs or about 100 calories. This does two things for you. It helps you to stave off the hungries and it inhibits your liver from dumping sugar into your blood.

Yes, tubers or starchy foods, including all grains do make bg's go up, but you will have to experiment to see which ones bother you the most and how much you can eat and get away with it. Good luck at the Doc's and come back and let us know how it turns out.

(looking for the reply button...oh here it is on the bottom...still new on how to use this forum)

Thank you Harold...I appreciate the information. What is HBA1c? I have done the glucose tolerance test before so I know what that is (yikes...the yucky orange sugary drink!) I plan to call my doctor on Monday or Tuesday.

One question about the veggies...is it ok to use the ranch dip to put a good taste to the vegt like carrots? I never thought your body would dump sugar if you are hungry...I thought it would use up the reserves like body fat to break it down to fix the hunger. I never took a course in nutrition so this area is weak on me. I can understand about what happens in hypo and hyper -glycemia.

Well, I don't mind eating meat and two vegt without pasta on my plate. I guess everybody is different on how they eat and what they can or can't do...

Oh by the way, how do I get a picture next to my screenname on the left screen?? I'm so new to this...

Thanks again...

Amy

Welcome to Diabesforums! Hope you enjoy it here.

Hba1c is a blood test to see your blood sugars over a the last three month.

In your user control panel( user cp) The link is on the of the page. Then click on edit options. On the bottom of that page is Avatar. Click change avatar to upload a picture. In order to have an avatar you must have a least 25 post.

Thanks for the information... For the Hba1c, sounds like the same routine to check for cholestrol and tricyclerides (every 3 months)...

Tony answered the A1c, for short, and does it really taste like orange to you? It taste like Dr. Pepper without the carbonation to me. As for the Ranch dip you will have to experiment to see what it actually does to you. The dumping I was talking about was the stored glucagon that is stored in the liver which normals use to keep their bg's in the normal range, but if your resistant it makes for high bg's without eating. It's also why when you get older fasting doesn't help you to loose weght like when your young and everything works the way it's supposed to. You will also hear dumping reffering to excess blood sugars passing through the kidneys which is what it does when they have been high too long and what make all of us pee like crazy sometimes. :-

Oh I see...the stored glucagon...I remember studying about this. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together about hunger and glucagon. That makes sense.

Yeah, the orange stuff they gave me was almost like drinking Orange soda (Crush) but I can't imagine with so much sugar in it. Yikes!

Yeah, I had that feeling of pee so much...hungry and thirsty seems to be the symptoms around.

That doesn't sound good about why it is going to be hard to loose weight.

Hi Air05, Welcome and tell us about yourself. Do you have diabetes and what type are you and how long have you had this condition?

Hi! I'm from Malaysia and my father had mild diabetes. I am not sure if it's type I or type II but seems like our family has the genes.

Hi Air,

So I guess you have not been dx'd as yet, but your out learning what you can since your father had it. That's really good, but it would help if you knew which one he had. Type 1's generally are under weight and type 2's are over weight. Some type 1's may have been overer weight and worn out their pancreas in which case they would have a sudden unexplained weight lose even while eating the same or more. Since you say he had it that may be the best indication you get as to which he had. With our current knowledge of this desease probably the best you can do now is avoid excessive weight and do whatever you can to stay healthy to avoid infections and the flu. Good Luck.

You can also tell a lot of the time by how old you are when you get it. Generally if you become diabetic before you are 30, it will be type 1. 40 or later is usually type 2. This isn't always true, but most of the time it is!
