Hi,

I am a 31 year old male who exercises regularly and has a BMI of 31.4. My curiosity in to diabetes started when a nurse at GP wrongly declared me as diabetic when my blood test indicated a blood sugar of 7.8 ( she thought it was fasting whereas actually I had breakfast).

However after a few days I had increased thirst at nights ( though my water consumption has not increased much). This was with frequent headaches in the morning ( for last 2 months) especially when I eat something salty like crisps. Anyway being overweight and stuff I bought a home blood sugar monitor. These are my results (across many days but roughly within a month) .

Random blood sugar test(three hours after lunch) - 4.4
FBG by nurse - 5.2
FBG at home - 5.4
FBG at home 5.2 and at 6.2 one hour after breakfast
FBG at home 5.8 and 7.2 after breakfast
2 hours after dinner BG was 6.2.
FBG at home 4.6 (last checked).

After three days the thirst was gone. Headaches have reduced too (after being there for like 2 months).

What would you make out from my data ?

I would have to convert all those numbers to give you a great idea of what I think. I beleive 7.2 would be around 130? I would say that is an okay post meal number. but the thing I would need to know is how long after first bite did you take your blood sugar? and what did you eat?

I guess the only way to truly know if you are concerned is to go to the DR. and have them do a GTT.

Hi Adhkirn!

Welcome to DF. Depending on how long it was following breakfast your reading of 7.8 mmol (140 mg/dL) can be on the upper side of normal.

The symptoms you describe "...frequent headaches in the morning ( for last 2 months) especially when I eat something salty like crisps." sounds more like a blood pressure headache than a BG induced headache.

The meter readings you provided all seem to be in the normal range.

Thanks for your replies. The 7.8 reading was about 40-45 minutes after my breakfast . I do not have BP and cholesterol is high normal at 4.

Its the increased thirst for three days that concerned me of diabetes. Based on my tests I have decided to go with the assumption of being non-diabetic. I have decided to do another round of checks a month later. Thanks again for your time.

Hey, But I have another question. If one is untreated diabetic or pre-diabetic does that mean that FBG levels are above hundred all or most of the times ? If that is not the case how does one diagnose when one's meter caught there sugar readings when FBG levels were lower than 100 ?

140, or 7.8 readings after 45 minutes could be normal. It is recommended to be under 140 2 hours after the beginning of a meal.

Also.. I am diabetic, but my morning fastings are almost always under 100. Being over 100 can be a sign of diabetes, but it is not the only way to be diagnosed ;)

I also think if you continue to be concerned in the future, ask your Dr for an OGTT. (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) (This is how I was eventually diagnosed)
