Hey all,

I have recently been put on Levemir. When I was controlling my levels by diet, after exercise I use to notice a drop in my sugar levels. Now that I am on Insulin, I find that my levels have increased after a gym work out. Anyone else had/have the same experience. Anyone know why this would occur?

Guidelines:

Do not work out if you are over 14 (or 250); this will likely increase your bg even more. Wait until your bg is lower.

If you are between 90 and 250 (5 - 14), you may be ok, depending on type and duration of work out.

If you are under 90 or 5, you likely need a snack (say 15 carbs) before working out.

These are only guidelines and you'll have to figure out what works best for you.

Personally, if I'm at about 7 (126), I can go on a long bike ride, and finish with an ideal bg.

(It is recommended that you check your bg about every 1/2 hour.)

And have something with you if you get a low. ;)

From my experience... when I get out there and try to kill myself with running or when I go hardcore lifting the weights, My sugar runs high for a little while and then is followed up by a low. I think it's the stress of it all. Just what happens to me...

As you exercise your body releases glycogin (sugar) from your liver to give your body energy.Myself being on a pump I have to give an extended bolus to cover the bg increase. After the workout is done I then have to eat protein so the bg doesn't go low. This is something that is going to be trial and error.Good luck and if you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

I've noticed that anaerobic exercises (sprints, lifting weights, etc.) will usually give me a rise in BG while aerobic exercise (jogging, biking) will lower my BG. Whenever I lift weights I usually follow it up with 15-20 minutes of light effort on the exercise bike at the gym. This usually helps with the post workout highs.
