I entered treatment for anorexia this year after a few months of disordered eating (eating very little in order to control my blood sugars, which, as most teens are familiar with, were swinging around greatly with the switch from a healthy home diet to a scary, diabetic-unfriendly college cafeteria one; I became very scared of eating at school because of what even the protein-based entrees did to my sugars). I'm a lot better now and my blood sugars are still great--ironically, even when I was at my sickest with the eating disorder, my sugars were always pretty awesome. Has anyone else been through this? I shudder to even think about the damage I've done by eating so little and dropping to such a low weight within just a few weeks; but I've also heard that many diabetics with eating disorders cause damage because they omit or alter their insulin regiment, which I never did.

Hi Zelack,

Thank goodness you kept up with your insulin. It prevented the effects of your eating disorder from being worse.

Unfortunately, focusing our entire attention on what we are eating can lead to problems, as you found out. Good for you for getting professional help and getting on top of things.

In my opinion, taking that step shows amazing strength of character. You have my admiration.

I hope to hear more from you and you could certainly offer good advice to others who might be dealing with eating disorders.

Mich
