Okay, I got a T2 dx only 2 mos ago ... thinking it is wrong.

Now, my FBG is creeeeeeeping creepily upward. The past 2.5 days I have not gone under 100? Despite eating less carbs, in fact? My morning readings in particular are higher. I WAS blaming exercise, 2 or 3 wks ago, but right now I am maintaining my exercise schedule. I am beginning to worry. It is not that high, I will grant you, but it IS higher than last month.

So ... how did you progress at the beginning of your, well, Beta-cell output decline? What did it look like? Was it sudden lurches of like 50-75 point increases, or was it more gradual?

My progression was very very short. I was diagnosed as a Type 2 on 12-20-2007. I was immediately put on Metformin. Over Christmas, I ate like a pig, and still lost 2 pounds. By the end of 2007, I was already maxed out with 2000 mg of Metformin a day... and my sugars were going up. By the first week of Jan 2008, I told my doctor I wanted to go on insulin, and that I wanted an antibody test. She agreed to the insulin, and sent me to an Endo for the test. While the Endo agreed with my doctor on my T2 diagnosis, the antibody test clearly revealed that I was a T1... I was positive for 3 different antibodies. I was officially rediagnosed on 01-28-08.

As I went on insulin, I started to gain weight. Of course, I also quit smoking around the same time, so it was a sort of double whammy. I have gained almost 80 pounds since then. I am now extremely insulin resistant. I continue to have increases of insulin dosage on occasion.

I am now at a ratio of 1:1. I take 165 units of Levemir a day (split 80/85). My sugars are in control now, so I hope as I lose weight, my needs will decrease.

As far as progression, I was considered totally insulin dependent less than 8 months after my original diagnosis.

D

I was originally diagnosed in 2004 with Gestational Diabetes. Sugars were stable with diet. By the time my second pregnancy rolled around- my endo decided to check for Gad antibodies and the were present. So I immediately went on insulin from Nov. 2006-April 2007. I definitely needed the insulin second time around so my pancreas was already working harder. By December 2008 my fastings had crept from 70's to 115 average-sometimes in the 120/130's. My doctor convinced me to go ahead and start taking insulin again to protect my remaining beta cell function. Since December of 08 I have been spot checking more frequently during the day and have found my dinners to run at their highest in the 170's. Soooo- it's been about 2 1/2 years since initial diagnosis and I seem to be fairly stable with just 4 units of basal. After seeing my high dinners lately, I suspect they may put me on some rapid acting for dinners... not sure yet. I go back April 27th. I am also getting a Cpep will show how much insulin I am producing but this will be my first baseline. I don't appear to be insulin resistant as much as just not producing enough.

Sorry so long...hope it helps...

My GP misdiagnosed T2 after a A1c of 7.5% and a positive GTT result - told me to "go see a dietician and come back in 6 months"(!!)! 6months later an endo ordered blood tests which came back positive for GAD65.

For 2 years I kept things OK with diet & exercise; later augmented by metformin. Then started on insulin, been on MDI for about 2 years now.

SO for me a very gradual pancreas melt-down. . . . I think I still have some beta cell function left, 'cos my TDD is around 15U. But then I was 50-something when diagnosed, and it seems the older you are the slower T1.5 progresses.

5 yrs ago, but caught it early by chance..went on Bernstein 2 yrs, but saw my pp numbers getting higher and higher despite less and less carbs.. when I got down to 25g per day and still was over 7 every meal (fasting still good) I added rapid insulin, one year later fastings started to rise, esp late afternoon, so added Lantus.. I too still have some native insulin as I take about 12-15 TDD ..I was thin when diagnosed and have always paid attention to exercising, I have gained about 10lbs since diagnosis and know I would have put more on if I did not act so obsessively about my D.. sorry to sound negative.. but I find this sucks! To be fair to the D, I am naturally a person who gains weight easily ...diabetes aside..hmm..I find that sucks too..lol
I do have the odd blow out though, so whiny baby mode off now....
