Hello my name is Carrie and this is the first time I have ever posted on this site. I am a type 1 diabetic and I just recently got married and my husband and I were planning to wait about a year to get pregnant. I have always wanted to have children but of course I wanted to be trying to get pregnant! Well, I am now pregnant. I think about 3 weeks pregnant and I am very scared! My last HgA1C was 6.9 about two months ago or so but with the stress of the wedding and the eating on the honeymoon I am guessing that it would be higher now. I had crazy blood sugar on the honey moon and after we got back and I we figured that I got pregnant on our wedding night. I found out this last Thursday...I just had a feeling that something was different plus my blood sugar had been out of control for no reason...usually high, so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. So I took another the next day, and it was positive again. I am not really sure why I am posting this other than for some encouragement. I have been testing like 10 times a day since I found out and my blood sugars have been great but I am just scared that there may have already been too much damage. I live in a rural town and plan to call a doctor in the nearest city on Monday. I have already picked an endo and a ob/gyn off of the internet. Please anyone, some words of encouragement/advice. Do you think that I have already done damage to the baby before I found out that I was pregnant?

I'm male so you can discount all the pregnancy advice but congratulations on a successful honeymoon;)
The 6.9 A1c is very good. If you can keep up the 10x testing and correct for the highs you and your baby should be fine. Lots of pregnant diabetics on here. I'm sure they can be more specific about how their stuff went.
Good lick!

Congratulations!
Please do see a doctor, but don't fret. High sugars make big babies. I don't know that any damage happens.
There's a couple type 1's here ready to deliver in the next couple of months, and I think one or two other newbies too.

Ditto What she said...I have found Diabetic Mommy to be an incredible source of support and knowledge!! Please know that diabetics can and DO have healthy babies. I totally understand your fears as I felt the same when I fell pregnant both times! My A1C was waaay "less than stellar" at 11 and 12. I know that the first trimester is the scariest with all that we have to worry about but I honestly don't think you did ANY damage at all, and you're doing exactly what you need to do by testing often and aiming for great number. As others have said, seeing a doctor is very important. CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy and please feel free to PM (private message) me with any ?'s. I'm always here!

There are actually other complications to having high blood sugars during pregnancy (especially during the first 6-8 weeks) other than a big baby at delivery. Organ formation can be disrupted and lungs and hearts can develop improperly. HOWEVER, this is not meant to scare you...I too am pregnant (almost 8 weeks) and my A1c was the same as yours during conception, and I experienced almost a whole week of constant highs while getting adjusted to the pump...don't worry, everything should be okay as long as your A1cs remain in the normal range and you don't have huge swings in your blood sugar.

My last A1C was 6.5%, and I too had some WACKY #s til I got my pump adjusted. My Dr. - my Endo - was not concerned in the slightest.
I am calling in my numbers 2x/week to get adjustments, you'll likely do the same.
I am to test as soon as I get up, before breakfast, 1hr post, before lunch, 1hr post, before dinner, 1hr post, and right before bed.
Targets:
Under 90 in AM
Pre-meal under 105
Post-meal under 120
They say many diabetics (if you are pumping) will use no basal during the day as they take so much at meals to be sure they stay under 120 that they don't need it (or snack without covering.)
By no means do I intend you to take my advice, just sharing my experiences. Everything will be okay Mommy!! :)
My EDD is 12/15 - yours?

Hi Carrie
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm also a type 1 expecting our baby in October.
An AC1 of under 7 is recommended by doctors for pregnancy so you are doing really well. It might comfort you that your baby survives independently of a yolk sac for the first month. But your AC1 is pretty good anyways.
Just to give you the heads up on something, endos recommend taking 5mg folate during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to reduce the increase risk of spinal problems, which occur in type 1 diabetics slightly higher amounts.
Congrats again.
