I'm just looking for any advice or encouragement. I just failed the one hour screen at 10 weeks, and am very concerned about early harm to the baby due to out-of-control blood sugar. (I have the 3-hour test on Friday). I had GD with my first pregnancy(controlled with diet), but never had my blood sugar tested after delivery. I should have insisted on follow-up, but didn't realize one could have diabetes without any risk factors or symptoms. I've started the diabetes meal plan, and am working to get the supplies I need for my meter. Anything else I should be doing? It seems uncommon to be diagnosed with GD in the first trimester, but I'm wondering if it's not so uncommon among those who have had GD before. Thanks.

I had GD in both my pregnancies. If you had it with the first one they generally check you for it earlier second time around. You are at higher risk for developing it again but I know people who developed it multiple times and who only developed it in the first pregnancy and not the second. So it doesn't always happen. Did they give you any indication on how high your numbers were? Keep in mind it is just a screen and doesn't actually mean you will be diagnosed as GD. It sounds like you are being proactive about eating right and being prepared to regulate your blood sugars. Devising an exercise plan that is safe for baby will help insulin sensitivity and keep blood glucose down too. Keep us updated on what transpires after your 3 hour test on Friday!

Thanks so much for your kind support. After a 165 at the 1 hour screen, I was expecting GD, but the 3 hour test came back within normal range. I've still gotten a couple of above 140 readings after dinner, even while limiting my carbs, so I'm going to continue to watch what I eat, test my blood sugar and exercise. Good luck to all of you other ladies challenged by GD!

i was dxd with gd which ended up to be lada...but i do have three fabulous daughters without any developmental difficulties...

i do advise you continue to monitor yourself, even after delivery and even if your numbers go down...preganancy is a high stress time on your body and organs, and you may seem to return to 'normal' after delivery...but it just may be a temporary relief....not to sacre you, but keep on top of it..you are also more susceptible to type 2 diabetes if you do indeed have GD (which I understand is typically resistant vs beta cell failure)..

good luck and take extra special care of yourself!
