After 16 weeks of rigorous training, I completed my second marathon in St. Louis, Missouri on April 19th. I ran this marathon one year ago, and what a difference. Last year, if you read my post then first marathon (http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/exercise/27587-even-diabetics-can-run.html). This year's weather brought about a few obstacles with rain the entire time, but what a thrill it was to see all my hard work pay off on race day. Check out my results here (http://results.active.com/pages/searchform.jsp?rsID=76788),and type in my bib number 481. You can also see some pictures taken of me during the race here (http://www.runphotos.com/browse.cfm?race_id=153&bib_number=481&searchword=&subFind=Find+Photos).

Last year, although I still had a fantastic time, I did have to end up walking some. This year I ran all 26.2 miles without walking. My finishing time was 3:12:12 (unfortunately I ran into some GI problems if you catch my drift). That's eight minutes off last year's time, but just over two minutes shy of qualifying for the Boston Marathon next year. This was my main goal for this marathon. Since I didn't make my goal, I have decided to run in the Chicago marathon in October. With 45,000 openings, can you believe it has already filled up? However, I have found a way in!!!

The only way to sign up to run after the cap has been placed on the number of entrants, you can still sign up with a charitable organization. And what do you know, I found one for supporting diabetes research!!! But there is a catch. After the initial $150 registration fee, I have to raise at least $750 to donate to the organization. The organization is called Diabetes Action (http://www.diabetesaction.org/site/PageServer?pagename=index). My goal is actually to raise $1000. I'm not very computer savvy, but as I learn more about it, I will be blogging about my training through their website so donors, and others can see how things are going.

I'm totally stoked about running in Chicago, and what a great way to raise money for diabetes research. I know I can make my goal of 3:10:00 in Chicago to qualify for the 2010 Boston Marathon! I'll post a link to my blog when I learn more, and get training under way. I'm going to take a couple months off though to allow my body to recover from this marathon. I'll still be running, but just not with the same intensity as I had while training. Anyway wish me luck!!

Congratulations on finishing your marathon, and lots of luck on your quest to get to Boston. For my next marathon I'm looking for a marathon where I can run for diabetes-related fund raising organization (I'd prefer education about diabetes).

Can you PM me the link to your blog? I've been looking for websites and blogs on diabetic athletes. I've come across 2 blogs by diabetic runners, which I find very informative and motivating. However, I've been unable to register with DESA. Diabetes Action's site and your blog will be welcome additions.

You should definitely have a good chance at qualifying for Boston with the Chicago marathon. Of course, it's always a bit of a roll of the dice regarding potential weather conditions, but with a good summer of training, you should be able to shave off that bit of time you need to.

Hi Kstreeter!

Congratulations on the accomplishment. While running is not my thing (actually it isn't my knees' thing), as a cyclist my "marathon" is an English Century (100 miles) and I know the amount of training that is required.

Keep up the great program.
