Today is my first day to post. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 8 or 9 years ago. Strangely, it hasn't made that much difference in my life, but maybe it's just my attitude. I went off meds for awhile because I was having so much trouble with Metformin (almost constant diarrhea, flying into rages, too many hypoglycemic reactions). After checking, I found that diarrhea can be one of the reactions to Metformin. The doctor I had at the time was "too busy" to listen, so I quit seeing him (actually, I never say him at all in 6 years, I always saw a PA).

I now take Januvia. I no longer fly into rages, and I no longer have a diarrhea problem.

I've known several people who were taking Metformin, and they and family members kept telling me that they were more irritable than they used to be, and in one case, there were rage problems.

I'm just curious. Has anyone else become more irritable since taking Metformin?

Welcome Skyedncer! I was on met when I was 1st DX'd but stopped after I had things under control. I never had any adverse reactions with it tho.

Welcome to the forums. I'm on Met since Nov'07, don't think I'm any more irritable than before starting it, there again I've always been grumpy so it would be hard to tell the difference ;)

No problem for me either, Skye.

Been taking met for about three weeks now. The only thing I have noticed is I seem to want to sleep all day. 12 or 14 hours and I can go back to sleep, nuts! So far I am not blaming the met and I am not depressed so I have no idea why.

I've had zero side effects from met.

Just wondering ... how do you know the irritability was not part of grief reaction? Heaven knows I had that, at first!

I suffer from a lot of allergies, including some food allergies, like eggs (I can't get flu shots because the vaccine is "incubated" in eggs). Because the irritability just got worse over time, I've concluded I'm allergic to something in metformin. Since I've been on Januvia, I'm rarely irritable anymore.

Well, glad you are not!

And yes, allergies can definitely cause irritability!
