Hi, I have a question for all of you. I have a job interview coming up where we'll be eating lunch. I don't really want to tell them that I have diabetes before I get the offer. I take Novolog with lunch, and I'm not sure what to do, or how to excuse myself to go to the bathroom right before we eat. Normally I'll just tell the waiter/waitress to let me know a couple of minutes before the food comes, but I feel awkward doing that in front of the interviewers and not explaining why. Do you all have any suggestions? Thanks!

With the recent flu scare you could always excuse yourself to go wash your hands befopre eating. I don't think a word would be said about it.

Great point! Just head out as they serve, and comment that you "forgot."

I'd just excuse myself when the time comes to inject. Everyone gets nervous at interviews, so they shouldn't think anything about it. I'd just say "excuse me, i'll be back in a moment," and leave it at that.

Hi maedwa. Welcome to the forum.

Can't you just excuse yourself to wash your hands or go to the toilet? It's very normal behaviour :) If you feel "just" before a meal seems strange, and you normally take your insulin just before a meal, a minute or so into eating should be just fine and not make much impact on your control.

Other option might be to just avoid carbs and spiking food for that meal, and skip the bolus. For example, get a roast and don't eat the potatoes and take it easy on the gravy and condiments. Only drink water. If you haven't tried this, it might be a good idea to rehearse it and see if you can choose a meal that will not impact much on your BG.

You might be getting too much insulin if you excuse yourself prior to eating. Your system might be uptight due to the stress of an interview and that will consume more calories leaving you prone to hypo, perhaps.

Unless you get really groggy if you don't do your insulin, I would think that taking your Novolog an hour or two late is not really going to be a problem. I do that many many times when a bunch of us go out for lunch. I don't tell anyone about diabetes in my life - just too much information for others to know, too many diabetes illiterates in the kulture.

If you get the job offer and you didn't take you insulin, that could be bad. Just excuse yourself before-hand and if you are feeling low at the time, just make sure you have glucose tabs in-pocket.
