Hi guys..I've been type 1 diabetic for almost 5 years...I suffered from diabulemia (insulin skipping to lose weight) for probably 2.5 years..I stopped this awful habit in August of 2008 but my recovery was followed by the development of gastroparesis and malnutrition as a result. I was in and out of hospitals and recovered in January of this year.

My questions is...can hair loss due to uncontrolled diabetes be reversible?

I started losing my hair when I became diabulemic and even after recovering from diabulemia continued losing it (probably from malnutrition from gastroparesis). My A1C levels have been excellent (6.7) since around August of last year but my hair hasn't shown improvement....

I know hair can take months to grow back but will it actually grow back for me or have I permanently damaged myself?

I can relate dude.

I started losing my hair (thinning, bald spot in the rear) around the time I started feeling symptoms. Went on for a while undiagnosed. Since getting my ish together, it's stopped, but...

From what I understand, you can only slow it down, not reverse it after a certain point. Only a hair transplant can get it back.

That's my understanding.

I'm also hoping someone has some good news.

keeranx , I believe you have an excellent chance of recovery.
I was really ill a few years ago & my hair was falling out.
Since then my d was dx'd & my bg's under control & my hair has grown back.
Relax & eat well.

I started losing a lot of hair eight months to when my diabetes was diagnosed at a HBAC1 of 20 in May 2008. I'm a girl so it was even worse to go bald in places at the top! I have really a lot of hair so it was falling out everywhere and my husband noticed.

It took a year to grow back but to answer your question, yes it grows back. It grew back for me.

Hey.

I also suffer with diabulimia. I lost a LOT of hair, and last year in August I went in to inpatient treatment for my eating disorder and the hair loss got worse for a few months. Then suddenly, about 4 months later, it started to get thicker and then started to grow quite fast. Since then it has grown about 3 inches and very thick, just to how it was before the eating disorder became out of hand. Hope this helps.

Also I want to congratulate you on your HBA1C, it's amazing to have that after suffering with diabulimia - I envy you! :o

My hair has been falling out for the past 8 years or so and yet for the past 4 years my A1c has been under 6.5. It stopped falling out during the past 7 months (I'm 7.5 months pregnant with twins). I am hoping that taking better care of my glucose during this time is making the hair at least stop falling out. I'm only 25 so its mighty awful to be losing hair at such a young age....I understand you all's pain :( Some responses here offer hope though so lets work on excellent blood sugar control!

That's about the only hopeful article I found about regrowing hair, post diabetes.

Even that doesn't really give a lot of hope.

That was one of the major symptoms I suffered when I was undiagnosed (and had not even an inkling of diabetes...) It completely freaked me out, because my hair would fall out in HANDFULS in the shower, and afterwards. Weirdly enough, my hair never seemed to thin terribly, and I noticed that my hair-loss rate had gone back to normal (I'm blonde, we shed like crazy...) about a month ago. I've been working really hard to control my BG since dx. Give it a little while!

Before my dx my hair grew very slowly.
Since my DX and getting my BG's under control my hair and my nails grow like weeds.

I have a haircut every 2 or 3 weeks and there's about an inch of hair dropping to the floor everytime.

Now if the UFO landing spot would just fill in.

"Hair Loss with Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the early symptoms of hair loss and hair thinning. Diabetes is a disease in which your body either does not produce insulin or it does not use it properly to convert sugar and starch into energy."

Diabetes is a SYMPTOM OF hair loss? -- they need to hire a proofreader, LOL. That, or they are a bit obsessed with hair ...
