My son is 2 and a half years old.

For about six months he has been complaining about "ants" on his finger and toes. Not sure if it is pain or tingling. The doctor said it may be Restless Leg Syndrome or he just like saying ants. This bothered me so I had my dad (who is T1) check his BG. It read 180 about an hour after eating then by two hours it was normal. (This by the way took place about a month ago) I called my son doctor and she said to randomly check it.

April 17th my dad checked my son's BG (his finger was cleaned with alcohol) because he has been peeing alot. It was about 30 minutes after he ate and it read 370. He check it again (I'm guess about a hour later) and it was 490. He ate pancakes (without syrup but with sugar in batter). I had to pick him up from my dads and by the time I got him to the hospital his level was 89 (this was about 2 hours after eating). They did blood work and everything was normal.

BTW here is the blood work that was done:
Hgb A1C
C peptide
Insulin Antibody
Islet Cell Autoantiboies
Anti GAD 65 Antibody
CO2
Acetone Serum
Glucose Urine
(all of these have come back fine)

We saw an Endo last Thursday and she thinks he may have MODY. She was great and answered all our questions but here are two that I didn't think to ask. Is it possible for it his BG to spike really high then be normal by 2 hours after eating? And with MODY will he always have a high BG after eating or is this something that will not occur all the time?

BTW from the 17th until his doctor appt on Thursday we had him on a "diet"...no sugars, more veggies, if he ate breads or pastas it was wheat. During this time all his reading were fine. The doctor has told us to allow him to have anything to eat for 2 weeks then to put him back on his "diet" for 2 weeks. We are checking his BG about 4 to 5 times a day.

Just a few thoughts here.

I don't know much about MODY to comment intelligently on that diagnosis or suspicion, but I'd be interested in the reasoning to suggest it here, did the endo explain?

With your testing, what are some of your other BG readings? Pre meal, after meal, and fasting?

I wouldn't clean with alcohol, just normal cleaning of hands, but of soap and rinse. Why? Because I don't know if there is potential interaction with any given alcohol or not. Why include that factor even if slim. Finger infection is extremely rare with BG testing, going by the practical experience of diabetics on this forum.

I can't answer your questions about the abnormal spike specifically, but there is a graph on this page that shows how non-diabetic control tends to work after a meal, for some reference. What is a Normal Blood Sugar? (http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/16422495.php)

The blue line is the "average", the brown lines are the range of non-diabetics in this test of a meal. You can ignore the rest of the lines. I suppose the main lesson it shows is that a non-diabetic's BG will spike up somewhat (though not to that degree) and be back around 80 in about an hour or so.

I would be getting a BG tester that also tests ketones, or some strips that test ketones, most definitely. It will be another indicator as to whether abnormally high BGs are occuring on a regular basis.

Good luck as you work through this and what might be going on.

Hi Felicia,
I hope you find some help here, perhaps from another parent of a toddler. I do remember having the feeling of itching on my legs prior to dx, it did feel a little like tiny bugs. Congratulations to you on picking up the problem! Hope things go well and that you will keep us posted.

All his test were fine...no antibodies, a1c was 5, normal fasting BG (his is always 90-100), the only high BG reading were after eating

With your testing, what are some of your other BG readings? Pre meal, after meal, and fasting?

These have been since May 1st:
Fasting have been 90. 98, 96
Premeal 107 then 91 after meal (2hours)
Premeal 109 then 97 after meal (2hours)
Premeal 94 then 117 after meal (2hours)

These are reading which we have let him have anything...honeybuns, french fries, coke. I know it is horrible to let him eat like this but the Endo told me to let him have anything!

I wouldn't clean with alcohol, just normal cleaning of hands, but of soap and rinse.

We don't always use alcohol. We use this when we are out doing thing. Yesterday for example we were 4-wheeler riding and had no place to wash his hands.

I would be getting a BG tester that also tests ketones, or some strips that test ketones, most definitely.

We have been using Ketone strips since the 17th.

Hi Felicia, I was recently diagnosed diabetic (LADA??) and found my 9 yr old with consistently high fasting and high bg 2 hrs after meals. She is currently being tested by Athena Diagnostics for MODY as her antibodies were negative and multi generation of thin diabetics in the family.
Your sons #'s look good since May with good A1c. Hopefully you will find the test at your dad's was faulty.. Steve
