View Full Version : Diabetic Foreshadowing?

In a recent conversation with my mom, she mentioned that i had been tested for diabetes when i was younger ( somewhere around nine) after recurrent skin infections and wt fluctuations with no apparent change in diet or exercise. Apparently nothing came out of it at the time, and i am not even sure just what test they did, (ie maybe urine for sugar, but pretty sure no bloodwork...I would remember that b/c i was terrified of needles at the time)
This brings to mind that a couple of times throughout my life, i experienced this pairing of infections that wouldn't heal and wt loss...later with a wt gain cycle...
Just wondering if any other 1.5's or really anyone at all experienced a "foreshadowing" of some sort and if there was any thing behind it, or just coincidence overall?

Interesting question. I remember I used to always get skin infections around my fingers. I didn't think much of it but mentioned it around a doctor at the clinic where I worked. He asked if I'd been tested for diabetes. As it was, I had been tested for that among other general things but I have no idea what test it was, and came up "negative". He seemed puzzled by that. That was in my late 30s and I wasn't diagnosed until age 58. I had unexplained weight loss but it turned out to my hyperthyroid.
I have chronic nail fungus, but who does not?
Crappy lipids (EXCEPT trigs) perhaps foreshadowed metabolic problems; Hashimoto's perhaps foreshadowed endo problems/ metabolic problems ...

Hi, Lorilei.
Yep, I was tested for diabetes when I was in junior high because I was drinking too much water (according to my dad) and had started gaining weight (which I kept doing until I suddenly started losing weight about a year before diagnosis.) They did a several-hour (don't remember exactly how long but I was there from morning til at least lunch-time) OGTT. The only thing I know about the results is that the doctor thought the lab mixed up two of the test results because one was low when it should have been high (one hour after drinking the glucose stuff) & the next one (two hour) was high, when it should have been low. Makes me wonder if the lab was right and there was something wrong even then (reactive low, then a glucose dump maybe?)
Only thing that makes me wonder is that I had a diabetes test when I was pregnant with my son (my first pregnancy) and it came back fine (and he was less than 6 lbs.)

:) Hi Lori,
Interesting question. Made me think about when i was a kid I used to get lots of boils on my legs and stomach. Would be put on Antibiotics a lot. I was never tested for D then though that I know of.

Nah, lori, I've thought about that a lot too. I wonder if it would be possible to get the medical records after all this time.

Just the music.
I'd be doing something strenuous or physical activity for a long period of time and I'd notice 2 things:
Primo: My thirst level would sometimes be way out of proportion to the activity and this would be accompanied with intense craving for carbs.

Secundo: While these two things were happening, I'd often hear ominous music:rofl: as though it were playing in the background. You know, kinda like you hear in horror or adventure stories. The kind of music that foreshadows something 'Bout to happen.:rofl:

I'm not a type 1.5 but when I was younger I was tested for diabetes because I was drinking a lot and tired all the time. It was just a routine blood test, no OGTT. Does make me wonder what would have happened if a more thorough test were performed.

It always seems like it took forever for me to heal from injuries. My Dad, who is also Diabetic, would check my BG and it was always fine. But I definitely remember the slow healing time.

I dont remember any thirst things however ever since my late teens if i ate breakfast i would have what i used to call the sugar shakes a few hours later. Then in the late afternoon the same again. I told my educator this which she thought was interesting but nothing came of it. Those sugar shakes are very much like the hypos now. I used to crave carbs and eat myself crazy till it stopped. Being young i just stopped eating breakfast and the problem went away. No idea why. In my 30s i was tested for Hypoglycemia which is a 5 hour gtt with insulins. The sugars were normal and the insulins werent performed. Would be interested to see what they were.

I agree..I do/did crave carbs (and not the candy kind, but the bread kind), however, i would always get quite sleepy after eating them...I used to pull off the road when driving to take a nap..wonder if my bg was changed a bit or if pushing out the insulin was taxing my body back then..
Oh, if we are talking carb craving ... I had that my entire LIFE till now! And yes, they had a calming/tranquilizing effect ... talk about serotonin issues, LOL!

I have had boils alot and frequent thirst since my daughter was born 13 yrs. ago. They did a fasting bg when I was pregnant both times but came back neg. My last child was born 2.5 yrs. ago. I failed that fasting bg. So I was diagnosed with GD. My A1c for the last two years has been normal. Then in Feb. this year, I went into DKA with a1c of 17.3. Kinda strange, huh? :)

I had spilled sugar in my urine once when I was 13.. I did a 2 hour OGTT and it was fine.. no one gave it a second thought. That was 7 years before I was diagnosed... I was definitely not fine then :)

When I was 16 I had blood work done by a chiropractor and he said I was a borderline diabetic. When questioned further he said nothing to worry about. I was 16 so I said ok and never thought about it until now.
15 years later when I was pregnant I tested neg for GD
18 years later the big diagnosis. Foreshadowing? Probably.
