Hello all. My name is Beth. I've been recently diagnosed with diabetes. Dad and his mom both had type 2, however I'm an insulin dependent diabetic....type 1.5? Doc doesn't know for sure. My fasting bs was 299....yup...been bad for a while. My a1c was 10.3....yup bad as well....so I did 1.5 weeks of novolog and levemir and metformin to get me back on track quickly....I now am trying to omit novolog at mealtimes, struggling a bit in mornings, but okay so far....ANY and ALL advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!:)

Welcome to the club!
The best thing you can do is test! Fasting and 1 & 2 hours after meals until you know how different foods affect your sugar.

Hi Beth, welcome to the forums.
The best advice I was given when first diagnosed was to test, test, test. Testing 2 hrs after your first bite of food will show you how different foods affect blood sugars and help you make better food choices.
Diagnosis is scary and stressful, but you'll find many here managing well...you will too! Ask lots of questions, we're here to help one another.

As usual, the Princess is right. Test, test, test. Regardless what the whackjobs might tell you, there is no such thing as testing too often.
There is a lot of info and experience here to be shared, so please ask any questions you have.

D

VERY true. And most likely you will end up paying out of pocket for some of the test strips ... at least at first!
And keep in mind ... those tests should be done with an eye toward making a dietary or treatment decision -- ie, do I need more meds, did this meal work for me? Each time ... if you do it out of habit without any thought ... that is not the point! So think about the numbers when you test.
