View Full Version : Exercising before or after eating?

I was browsing the forum and reading some responses and I found a response form someone who ate a taco at lunch, checked his bs 2 hours later, decided it was too high and then said he would exercise before eating them next time. Hmm. Never thought about exercising before eating to keep #'s down.

Does this work? Does it matter when we exercise - before or after a meal? I have been exercising after I eat ever since dx'd almost a year ago.

Thoughts? :)

If we are going out for dinner and I know we'll split a dessert or anything with more carbs than usual, I'll exercise beforehand...not immediately beforehand, but within a couple of hours.

I would think if you exercised right beforehand, your blood sugar might rise in response to exercise...then you'd eat and it would rise some more before coming back down.

Of course, I have no personal experience to base it on...just my thoughts.

Lots of time I take a 3 mile walk before dinner. I'm not sure if it always works to lower bg. If I exercise late in the morning my bg numbers will go higher. Usually if I exercise at night they go down. Who can figure it out.

I was told by my dietician that aerobic excercise will have a positive affect on BG for 24 hours ...

I like to excercise after lunch (so I don't go low) ... the after dinner AND the next AM fast readings seem to be lower than expected. :) :)

Thanks! I'm going to give the aerobics in the evening a try and see what happens. My hips still aren't too happy with walking distances. Hopefully that will be resolved soon.

Yep -- use up all the glycogen in your muscles, and give the glucose a place to go (besides your adipose deposits ... ).

Unfortunately my schedule is not so flexible, too many other time commitments. I ex. after dinner most evenings.

I used to walk 2 miles, quite fast, then come home, take FBS and then have breakfast. I found that my FBS was always higher if I walked. I stopped walking first thing, wait til mid am, numbers improved considerably. Confusing to me since I though exercising brought #s down. My walks are very aerobic so I guess long range #s go down.
